2011 Men's Water Polo News...

This Week's Sports Schedule

09.14.11 - CERRITOS LOSES GOALKEEPER AND THEN GAME
It was very early in the game when Cerritos College freshman water polo goalkeeper Michael Skinas (La Serna HS) caught a finger in the eye and was forced to leave the game. It couldn't have come at a worse time, as the Falcons were opening South Coast Conference play against rival Long Beach City College, a team they dropped a 7-5 decision to four days ago at the Golden West Tournament. The Falcons (6-4) were able to stay close through the first half, but the Vikings (5-0) took control in the second and came away with a 15-8 victory. Cerritos will now play their second game of the day, as they host Cal Tech at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game at the Falcon Aquatic Center.

Replacing Skinas, who had started every game of the season, was freshman Isaiah Fairbanks (Paramount HS), who looked to his defense to try and force Long Beach to take some ill-advised shots. Although they fell behind 4-1 in the second quarter, the Falcons scored a pair of goals, as sophomores Isaiah Irvine (Schurr HS) and Isaac Ogloblin (I.E.S. Cervantas, Spain HS) got the team to within 4-3 with 5:57 left in the first half.

But once the second half started, the Vikings turned to Tristan Winterhalter, who scored three of his game-high five goals in the third quarter. His two goals in the span of 26 seconds turned a close 9-6 game into an 11-6 Long Beach City lead. Additionally, Viking goalkeeper Vince Ward came up with several big saves each time the Falcons looked to get back into the game.
