05.18.09 - Falcons finish off record-breaking
year
Although the Cerritos College
softball team was unable to defend their state
title, it certainly doesn't mean it was a lost
season. The Falcons won over 40 games for the second
year in a row (41-11-1) - and only second time in
school history - while they captured the South Coast
Conference title for the second season in a row. The
team also advanced to the state tournament, where
they attempted to be the first school in the
eight-team format to come back from losing their
first game to win six game in two days to win the
title. They won two on the first day, but just
didn't have enough in the tank and were eliminated
by Sierra College, 8-1 on Saturday...[more]
05.16.09 - Grueling day ends in elimination
Looking to become the first
school ever to come back after losing their first
game to win the state championship, the Cerritos
College softball team almost made their way to the
final day. But after taxing wins over Riverside
College (10-4) and Cypress College (11-10 in 11
innings), the Falcons were out of steam when they
had to face Sierra College in their third game of
the day at the Salinas Sports Complex on Saturday.
Cerritos dropped an 8-1 decision and were eliminated
from the California Community College Athletic
Association state championship and concluded the
season with a 41-11-1 record. Santa Ana College is
the only team to ever come back to win the title
after losing their first game back in 1985, but it
was only a four-team tournament, as opposed to the
eight-team format currently used...[more]
05.15.09 - Loss sends Falcons to loser's bracket
This is not how the Cerritos College
softball team had envisioned the start of the 2009
California Community College Athletic Association
State Championships. The Falcons, seeded #2 from the
South, came into their game against Sierra College
at the Salinas Sports Complex riding a 14-game winning
streak, along with a 12-game post-season winning
streak. Cerritos missed out on several offensive
opportunities and dropped a 3-2 decision. With the
loss, the Falcons (39-10-1) must now win six games
over the course of the next two days in order to
defend their state title. They get started when they face Riverside College in an elimination
game at noon on Saturday. The only team to ever come
back to win the state title after losing their first
game was Santa Ana College in 1985, but it was only
a four-team tournament at the time.
With a chance to win the game in the
bottom of the seventh inning after Wolverine pitcher
Samantha Baker walked freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) and freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS), sophomore
outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) looked
to win the game. However, she sent a soft liner to
shortstop Holli Bingaman, who threw to first base to
double up Vaaulu. But the play was not over, as
Godoy attempted to advance to third base, but was
thrown out for a rare triple play and an abrupt end
to the game...[more]
05.11.09 - Team opens state tournament against
Sierra
On Friday at noon, the Cerritos
College softball team will begin defense of their
state championship when they play Sierra College at
the Salinas Sports Complex. The Falcons (39-9-1),
the #2 seeded team from the South, will be facing
the #3-seeded Wolverines (40-13), who defeated host
Fresno City College twice on Sunday to advance to
the state tournament. Cerritos is riding a 12-game
post-season winning streak, which includes two-game
sweeps over Ventura College at Saddleback College in
the Regional Playoffs. The Falcons have also won
their last 14 games this season...[more]
05.10.09 - Falcons launch six home runs in win
After the Cerritos College
softball team hit six home runs in their 12-4,
six-inning win over Saddleback College on Sunday to
sweep their best-of-three Super Regional, their
might be talk about renaming Nancy Kelly Field to
The Launching Pad. The Falcons, seeded #2 in the
South, saw freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) set a
school record with three home runs in the game,
while the six in one game is also a new school
record. Vaaulu also drove in six runs to lead the
way. The win sends Cerritos (39-9-1) back to the
State Championships, where they will get to defend
their title. The Falcons will open the state
tournament on Friday at the Salinas Sports Complex
against an opponent to be determined.
Cerritos took a 2-0 lead on solo home
runs by Vaaulu and freshman
designated hitter
Brandi
Rummell (La Serna HS), but the
Gauchos took a brief 3-2 lead after two innings.
Falcon pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) struggled to find the strike zone in
the second inning and walked three batters. The
third was with the bases loaded against ninth-place
hitter Chelsea Lievanos, which forced in a run.
Kelly Bosshart then gave Saddleback their only lead
of the series with a two-run single...[more]
05.09.09 - Cerritos powers their way past
Saddleback
The
Cerritos College softball team has been using the
long ball all season long on their way to 38 wins.
The Falcons, seeded #2 in the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, took a 1-0 best-of-three series
lead with a 10-2, five-inning win on Saturday at
Nancy Kelly Field against #8-seeded Saddleback.
Cerritos (38-9-1) slammed three more home runs to
give them 54 on the year. As a result, the Gauchos
(29-13) need to win two games on Sunday, with the
first slated for noon
The home run
barrage started in the bottom of the first inning
when freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) added to
her school single-season record with her 17th on the
season off Lauren Molina. Freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) led off
with a walk and was sacrificed to second base. After
fouling off four straight pitches, Vaaulu sent a
line shot over the left-center field fence for a
two-run home run...[more]
05.05.09 - Samantha Vaaulu named National Catcher
of the Year
Cerritos College freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
has had a remarkable season in leading the Falcons
to the South Coast Conference championship and the
team is one step away from advancing to the state
championships to defend their title. On Monday,
Vaaulu was named the Diamond Sports Catcher of the
Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
In addition to Vaaulu, freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) and freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) were also
named 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA California JC
All-Americans.
On the year, Vaaulu is one of four starters batting over .400
(.442) and broke the single-season school record for
home runs with 16 and is closing in on the record
for most RBI in a season. As the Falcons prepare for
the Super Regional this weekend against Saddleback
College, Vaaulu has 63 RBI, while the school record
of 71 was set last year by Jessica Navarro,
who was the NFCA Player of the Year in 2008. In
addition to her prowess at the plate, Vaaulu has not
made an error behind the plate all season and has
thrown out 12 runners attempting to steal bases...[more]
05.04.09 - Upset in another series pits Falcons
against Saddleback
The way the California Community
College Softball Coaches Association has set it up
for the playoffs, when a lower seeded team upsets a
higher seeded team, the lowest remaining seed
continues to face the highest remaining seeded team.
As a result of #11-seeded Los Angeles Mission
College upsetting #6-seeded Long Beach City College
over the weekend, the #2-seeded Cerritos College
softball team will now face #8-seeded Saddleback
College in the Super Regional, which will be played
at Nancy Kelly Field on Saturday and Sunday. Game
one of the best-of-three series will be played at
2:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the second game is
slated for noon on Sunday with a third game to be
played, if necessary...[more]
05.03.09 - Falcons waste little time in sweeping
Ventura
The Cerritos College softball
team wasted little time opening up a sizeable lead
in their Southern California Regional Playoff game
at Nancy Kelly Field on Sunday afternoon. The
Falcons scored eight runs in the top of the first
inning and cruised their way to a 10-0, 5-inning win
over Ventura College to advance to the Super
Regional. Cerritos (37-9-1), who swept the Pirates
and are seeded #2 in the playoffs, will host either
Grossmont College or East Los Angeles College next
Saturday and Sunday at Cerritos. The Falcons are 1-1
on the year against Grossmont, while they went 4-0
against East LA, who is a member of the South Coast
Conference.
The game started with freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) lacing
a triple down the right field line and then came
home on a base hit up the middle by freshman
shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS). A single by
freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) and a walk
to sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) loaded
the bases. Godoy then scored on a wild pitch before
freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) singled home
Vaaulu. After freshman designated hitter
Brandi
Rummell (La Serna HS) was
walked, freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) drove in a
run on a ground out. Freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) then walked
before sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) drove in a
run on a sacrifice fly. The final three runs came
home on a three-run home run by Castrellon, her 12th
of the season...[more]
05.02.09 - Cerritos powers their way to playoff
win
Using the former Baltimore
Orioles manager Earl Weaver's approach to winning
baseball games, the Cerritos College softball team
relied on a pair of three-run home runs and a
two-run shot to post an 8-4 Southern California
Regional Playoff win over Ventura College on
Saturday afternoon at Nancy Kelly Field. The Falcons
(36-9-1), who are seeded #2 in the playoffs, hold a
1-0 best-of-3 series lead over the Pirates (25-19),
with the second game slated for noon on Sunday. A
third game will be played 30 minutes after the
conclusion of the second game, if necessary.
Freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) opened the
scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the
second inning off Ventura pitcher Cyanna Navarro.
With one out and freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) on third
base, Ventura launched her fourth home run of the
season over the left-center field fence...[more]
04.25.09 - Falcons earn #2 seed for playoffs
Coming off a state championship
last year, the Cerritos College softball team knew
that they would be the biggest target a team could
knock off every time they stepped onto the field.
The Falcons responded each time and posted a 35-9-1
regular season record, while they went 17-1 in South
Coast Conference play to win their second title in a
row. The team will now being their "second season",

best-of-three series. The first game will be played
at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the second is
scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, with a third

04.23.09 - All 10 starters earn conference honors
Each game, Cerritos College head
coach
Kodee
Murray submits a lineup card that
consists of 10 names. The same 10 names were used in
virtually every game for the Falcons during South
Coast Conference play, in which the team posted a
17-1 record and won the championship. They were
rewarded on Thursday with all 10 being named
All-South Coast Conference, while six of them earned
1st Team honors.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who posted a 14-1 conference record
with a 1.27 ERA and 11 complete games, was named the
conference's Pitcher of the Year. Perez-Ashley

The Cerritos College softball
team, looking to get the post-season underway,

close out their regular season. The Falcons,
champions of the South Coast Conference, will enter
the playoffs with a 35-9-1 record, while they

and never looked back against the Lancers. Freshman
right fielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) started
the inning with a base hit and stole second base

catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) doubled
home Castrellon before sophomore outfielder

04.17.09 - Record-breaking day in Falcon win
Freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) needed only
one pitch on Friday to set a new school record for
most home runs in a season. With teammate
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) on first
base, Vaaulu sent the first offering from Los
Angeles Harbor College's Heather Ward over the
center field fence for her 14th home run of the
season. Her total breaks the record of 13, set by
Jessica Navarro during the 2007
season. Vaaulu and the rest of the Falcons pounded

0-1. On Thursday, the team will travel to face Mt.
San Antonio College in a match-up of the last two
state championship games. Cerritos won the title in
2008 by beating the Mounties, while Mt. SAC defeated
the Falcons in the finals in 2007.
Cerritos took a
2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) drilled
a one-out home run, her fourth of the season. Two
batters later, sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) clubbed
her second of the year, while she followed that
at-bat with her third of the season in the fifth
inning that gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead...[more]
02.27.09 - Cerritos blows out LA Harbor
Thanks to an 11-run first inning,
the Cerritos College softball team was able to post
a 16-4 South Coast Conference win at Los Angeles
Harbor College on Friday afternoon. The win over the
Seahawks was the second in the week, as the Falcons

02.23.09 - Pitchers share no-hitter
Cerritos College freshmen
pitchers
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) and
Joanna Avila
(El Rancho HS) combined to toss a
six-inning 8-0 no-hitter over Los Angeles Harbor
College in their South Coast Conference opener at
Nancy Kelly Field on Monday afternoon. It appeared
as though the Seahawks (6-3, 0-1) would break up the
no-hitter until they were called for using a
pinch-hitter twice in the same game for the same
player. As a result, the batter was called out, thus
keeping the no-hitter alive. The Falcons (10-3-1,
1-0) will now travel to face LA Harbor at 3:00 p.m.
on Friday in another SCC contest....[more]

mercy rule. The Falcons (10-3-1) will now open South
Coast Conference play on Monday at 3:00 p.m. when
they host Los Angeles Harbor College, who is
fielding a team for the first time.
In the loss, the
Hornets scored the game's only run in the top of the
sixth inning off freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley
( Long Beach Poly HS). As for the Cerritos
bats, they had just two hits in the game and only
had one runner reach second base.
Things were
different in the win over the Marauders, as the team
scored twice in the first inning and opened up their
huge lead after freshman first baseman

Ventura ( Carson HS) blasted a
three-run home run in the third inning for a 6-0
lead...[ more]
02.11.09 - Cerritos slams Cypress, 11-3
Although the Cerritos College
softball team trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of
the second inning, they knew that they would still
get plenty of chances to swing their bats. The
Falcons responded with seven runs in the bottom of
the second inning, thanks to a grand slam by
freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS).
Complimenting the grand slam was a two-run home run
just two batters later by freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) that
highlighted a seven-run inning. The Falcons went on
to post an 11-3 win, as the game was halted in the
bottom of the fifth inning after the mercy rule
(eight-run lead) in enacted.
Cerritos (7-2-1) will now travel to Grossmont College tomorrow and
face Chaffey College at 1:00 p.m. and then the host
Griffins at 3:00 p.m. in a pair of non-conference
games...[more]
02.04.09 - Team suffers second one-run loss
A young Cerritos College softball
team is learning firsthand about the rigors of a
busy schedule that requires teams to play upwards of
six games in a weekend and then come back to play
back-to-back games during the week. After the
Falcons went 5-0-1 at the Glendale Tournament over
the weekend, the team lost their second one-run game
in as many days, a 5-4 decision to Saddleback
College on Wednesday in a non-conference
contest. The Falcons (6-2-1) will now compete in the
Green and Gold Tournament at Bill Barber Park in
Irvine this weekend, weather permitting...[more]

the Falcons on Tuesday. Cerritos (6-1-1) will now

01.27.09 - Falcons power their way to victory
In their first opportunity to
defend their state championship, the Cerritos
College softball team unleashed the same kind of
power they displayed by winning the state title last
year. The Falcons, sporting just three returning
players and only one starter, received home runs
from four different players, as the team recorded a
9-0 win over Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday
afternoon. Cerritos (1-0) will now enter the
Glendale Tournament and open with a 9:00 a.m. game
against Ventura College on Friday.
Coupled with the
11 hits, the Falcons also received a one-hitter from
freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who walked three and struck out four.
The only hit she allowed was a bunt in the third
inning, while not allowing any runners to advance
past first base...[more]
