05.06.12 - Season comes to an end for Cerritos
Briana Quintana looks for a hit in the Falcons 15-7 loss to Southwestern.After opening the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday with a 5-4 loss to visiting Southwestern College, the Cerritos College softball team knew that they would need to win twice on Sunday to advance to the Super Regional next weekend. The win would not be in the cards for the #3-seeded Falcons (29-10), who dropped a 15-7, 6-inning loss to the #14-seeded Jaguars (27-12) at Nancy Kelly Field to end their season. Cerritos trailed, 8-1 after the first three innings, and got as close as 9-7 after five innings. But that's when Southwestern scored six times in the sixth inning to end the game on a mercy rule.

Freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) had her worst game of the season, allowing 15 runs on 19 hits, as she showed signs of wearing down as the game progressed. Her teammates were able to score six straight runs to get to within 9-7, but could not finish the sixth inning. Four different Southwestern players had three hits on the day, while a pair of them - Briana Albreksten and Alex Ross - drove in four runs...[more]

05.05.12 - Falcons backs against the wall after 5-4 loss
Krista Mele swings for the fences in the Falcons 5-4 loss to Southwestern.Last season, the Cerritos College softball team was seeded #4 for the Southern California Regional Playoffs and opened the post-season with a 9-2 loss to Bakersfield College. The Falcons came back to win the next two games to advance to the Super Regional. If they are to reach the next round this year, they will have to defeated #14-seeded Southwestern College twice on Sunday after losing, 5-4 on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field. The second game of the best-of three-series is scheduled for noon, with a third game to be played 30 minutes at the conclusion of the second game, if necessary.

The Falcons (29-9), seeded #3 for the playoffs, trailed 5-1 before scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to get within striking distance and ended up leaving 11 runners on base, with seven of them in scoring position. The Panthers (26-12) opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out, two-run home run by  Alex Gallegs off freshman starting pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS). 04.30.12 - Players receive post-season honors
Briana Quintana was named All-Southern California and 1st Team All-SCC.Lauren Castrellon earned All-State honors after being named the conference's Player of the Year.When a team wins the South Coast Conference championship, posts a 29-8 regular season record and earns the #3-seed for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs, there's bound to be some post-season accolades bestowed upon the team. For the Cerritos College softball team, that translated into sophomore outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) being named All-State, as well as the conference's Player of the Year, while sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria (Palm Springs HS) and sophomore shortstop Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS) both earned All-Southern California and 1st Team All-SCC honors. In addition, head coach Kodee Murray was named the conference's Coach of the Year, while five other players garnered all-conference recognition.

Castrellon, who earned 1st Team All-SCC and All-State Tournament honors in her freshman year (2009), leads the Falcons in batting average (.455), triples (6), RBI (41) and stolen bases (21), while Sanabria batted .400 in the regular season to go along with her team-high 16 doubles, four home runs and 40 RBI. As for Quintana, this marks the second year in a row that she earned All-Southern California honors, while she hit .390 with a team-high eight home runs and 36 RBI...[more]

04.28.12 - Cerritos seeded #3 for regional playoffs
After winning their fourth South Coast Conference championship in the last five years, the Cerritos College softball team has been seeded #3 for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Falcons (29-8) will be hosting #14-seeded Southwestern College in a best-of-three series that will start at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field, while the series will conclude on Sunday. The Jaguars (25-12) finished in a tie for second place in the Pacific Coast Conference. The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to the Super Regional the following weekend...[more]

04.27.12 - Former pitcher continues to earn awards
Former Cerritos softball pitcher earns third straight Pitcher of the Week award at West Virginia Wesleyan University.It's starting to become a weekly tradition for former Cerritos College All-American pitcher Hillary Perez-Ashley, who is a senior at West Virginia Wesleyan University. For the third week in a row, Ashley-Perez has been named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athlete Conference Pitcher of the Week, as she continues to help her team toward the post-season. Last week, Perez-Ashley, who was named the Southern California Pitcher of the Year and South Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year in both of her seasons with the Falcons, went 3-0 with 23 strikeouts without allowing a walk. She allowed just three hits and one run against Davis & Elkins and followed that up with complete-game shutouts against both Alderson-Broaddus and Fairmont State.

On the year, Perez-Ashley is 16-3 on the year with a 1.84 ERA, as the Bobcats are 35-11 and won their fifth consecutive WVIAC regular season title. They opened the WVIAC Tournament with wins over Ohio Valley, Fairmont State and West Virginia State with Perez-Ashley earning the win in the first two games...[more]

04.24.12 - Comeback win secures outright championship
Trailing 5-3 heading into the sixth inning, the Cerritos College softball team knew that all they needed to do in order to secure the outright championship of the South Coast Conference was to defeat El Camino College. The Falcons (29-8, 20-1) responded with seven runs in the sixth inning and came away with a 10-5 win for their fourth championship in the last five years and first since 2010. The team will now wait until Saturday to find out where they are seeded in the Southern California Regional Playoffs and who they will host when the best-of-three series gets underway on May 5-6...[more]

04.21.12 - Team drops close game to #1 Cypress
With a chance to earn crucial power points prior to the start of the Southern California Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College softball team, ranked #3 in Southern California, dropped a 3-2 non-conference decision to #1-ranked Cypress College on Saturday. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Falcons (28-8), who close out their South Coast Conference season with a 3:00 p.m. game at El Camino on Tuesday. The top eight seeded teams will play host to a best-of-three series in the first round of the playoffs, which will take place on May 5-6...[more]

04.19.12 - Falcons clinch share of conference title
Lily Cornejo won her 26th game of the year, as the Falcons clinched a share of the SCC title.For the fourth time in the last five years, and first since 2010, the Cerritos College softball team has clinched at least a share of the South Coast Conference championship on the strength of their 3-1 win over Long Beach City College at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. The Falcons (28-7, 19-1), who lead second place Mt. San Antonio College by one game with one SCC game remaining, will travel to Cypress College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game and then close out the regular season with a 3:00 p.m. conference game at El Camino College. The SCC title is the fifth in the career of head coach Kodee Murray, while it marks the 10th conference championship in school history.

Cerritos broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a two-run double by sophomore outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) off Vikings (18-18, 12-8) pitcher Frances Campoy. Freshman first baseman Andrea Arellano (Downey HS) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, with freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) sacrificing pinch-runner Sacheen Contreras (Warren HS) to second base. 04.17.12 - Cerritos wins 10th straight game
Eight different players collected at least one hit to help lead the Cerritos College softball team to an 8-3 South Coast Conference win over Pasadena City College at Jackie Robinson Field on Tuesday. The win was the 10th in a row for the Falcons, who maintained their one-game lead over Mt. San Antonio College in the SCC with two games remaining. 04.13.12 - Hall of Fame welcomes inaugural class
(L-R) Barbara Reinalda, Ron Yary and Wally Kincaid are the first three from athletics to be inducted into the Cerritos College Hall of Fame.
Before an overflow crowd of more than 380 in attendance, seven people became the first inductees into the Cerritos College Hall of Fame on Thursday night at the Cerritos Sheraton. Of the seven, three of them were from athletics, as Wally Kincaid (Distinguished Coach), Ron Yary (Distinguished Male Athlete) and Barbara Reinalda (Distinguished Female Athlete) joined Dr. Gerald Roodzant (Distinguished Alumnus), John Gallant (Distinguished Classified/Confidential), Dr. Edward Bloomfield (Distinguished Faculty) and GST, INC (Distinguished Corporate Partner) as members of the inaugural class.

One of her directives after being appointed the college's President/Superintendent, Dr. Linda Lacy wanted to start a Hall of Fame, and summoned the college's Foundation, athletic department and staff to help gather nominations, while the Hall of Fame Steering Committee settled on their choices for the seven categories...[more]
 

04.12.12 - Falcons come back for conference win
Knowing that they will clinch their fourth South Coast Conference championship in the last five years if they win their final four games, the Cerritos College softball team came back from an early 2-1 deficit to post an 8-2 win over host East Los Angeles College on Thursday. The Falcons (26-7 overall) improved to 17-1 in conference play and continue to lead second place Mt. San Antonio College by one game. On Tuesday, the team will travel to Pasadena City College for a 3:00 p.m. conference game...[more]

04.10.12 - Late rally results in 9-8 win over Mt. SAC
Cerritos scored five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 9-8 win over Mt. San Antonio.With first place in the South Coast Conference on the line, the Cerritos College softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against rival Mt. San Antonio College to post a 9-8 win at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win moves the Falcons (25-7, 16-1) into first place with four SCC games remaining, while the Mounties dropped to 25-4 and 16-2. Cerritos will travel to East Los Angeles College on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. contest, as they try to move closer in securing their fourth conference title in the last five seasons.

Trailing 3-0 after the first inning and 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Falcons used a two-out, two-run double by sophomore third baseman Krista Mele (California HS) to drive home the game-winning run and send the Cerritos players running onto the field in jubilation. Run-scoring singles by freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) and sophomore outfielder Maiya Tallakson (Redondo Union HS) chased starting pitcher Natalie Sanchez (13-2) in favor of Nicole Soltis. She got sophomore outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) to ground out, but it scored a run to get the team to within 8-7. 04.05.12 - Cerritos scores late runs to post win
Over the last several games, the Cerritos College softball team has needed to go through their batting order at least once before their bats have come alive. In their 9-1, six-inning South Coast Conference win over Los Angeles Harbor College at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday, the Falcons led just 3-1 heading into the sixth inning. By then, the batters had faced Seahawks pitcher Natalie Ayala twice and responded by posting six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule. The victory allowed Cerritos to stay within striking distance of taking over first place in the SCC, as they improved to 15-1, while the team is now 24-7 on the year. The Falcons will host Mt. 04.03.12 - Falcons blow out Compton, 15-1
It took five batters for the Cerritos College softball team to get their first hit against host ECC Compton Center in their South Coast Conference game on Tuesday. But once they got that hit, the Falcons were able to put up big numbers, as they recorded a 15-1 win on Tuesday, while slapping out 16 hits, with 11 of them going for extra bases. The win improves the team's record to 14-1 in conference play and 23-7, as they prepare to host Los Angeles Harbor College at 3:0 p.m. on Thursday...[more]

03.29.12 - One big inning enough to produce win
Lauren Castrellon had three hits in the Falcons 10-0 win over El CaminoIn three of the four innings they batted, the Cerritos College softball team did not collect a single hit and had just two base runners. But in the second inning, the Falcons scored 10 runs, which would be all the offense needed in a 10-0 South Coast Conference win over El Camino College on Thursday afternoon at Nancy Kelly Field. The win keeps Cerritos in first place in the conference with a 13-1 record, while they improved to 22-7 overall. The team will travel to Compton on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. game against ECC Compton Center.

In that huge inning, sophomore shortstop Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS) started it with a solo home run, her sixth of the season, followed by singles from sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria (Palm Springs HS) and freshman first baseman Andrea Arellano (Downey HS). Freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) delivered an RBI double before sophomore outfielder Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly HS) drew a walk. Sophomore outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) added an RBI single, with sophomore third baseman Krista Mele (California HS) driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. A walk to freshman outfielder Shelby Blair (Lakewood HS) chased starter Jacklyn Peyrefitte for Marissa Merced, who was met by a three-run double from sophomore designated player Jackie Flores (California HS). Sanabria added an RBI triple before Arellano finished off the scoring with a two-run home run, her fifth of the year...[more]

03.27.12 - Falcons come away with 4-1 win
The Cerritos College softball team took advantage of three Long Beach City College errors, which helped propel them to a 4-1 South Coast Conference win on Tuesday. The win improved the Falcons record to 21-7 overall and 12-1 in the SCC, while the host Vikings dropped to 13-14 and 7-5. After spotting Citrus College a 1-0 after the first inning, the Cerritos College softball team used a pair of fourth-inning home runs to account for all of their runs in a 5-1 non-conference win on Friday. The victory improved the Falcons record to 20-7 on the year, as the state's 10th ranked team will travel to Long Beach City College on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference game...[more]

03.22.12 - Power numbers go up in 13-1 win
Courtney Priddie hit a grand slam in the Falcons 13-1 win over Pasadena City.The Cerritos College softball team hit three home runs, including a grand slam by sophomore Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly HS), to help propel the team to a 13-1 South Coast Conference win in five innings at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday afternoon. With the three bombs, the Falcons (19-7, 11-1) have now hit 29 home runs on the season, but the power didn't come from the team's regular big hitters. They will look to add to that total on Friday, when they travel to Citrus College for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference game.

In the bottom of the first inning, freshman outfielder Shelby Blair (Lakewood HS), who's known for her ability to spray the ball to all sides of the field, launched her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to give the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage. In the second inning, freshman first baseman Andrea Arellano (Downey HS) tagged Lancers pitcher Kayla Moore (4-8) for a solo home run, her third of the season. But the big blast was a grand slam by Priddie as part of a seven-run third inning. The round-tripper was just her second of the season...[more]
 

03.20.12 - Falcons wear down East LA, 9-1
Lauren Castrellon homered and scored three times in the Falcons 9-1 win over East LA.It took a few innings, but the Cerritos College softball team's bats were able to wear down visiting East Los Angeles College in a South Coast Conference game at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. The Falcons, who improved to 10-1 in the SCC and 18-7 overall, scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, but used a five-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Cerritos will now host Pasadena City College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in another conference contest.

In addition to the run support, the Huskies (9-16, 4-7) also committed five errors on the day, which led to five of the runs being unearned. It started in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) was safe at first base on a fielding error by East LA pitcher Janessa Martinez (5-4). After stealing second base, the aggressive Castrellon scored from second base when Huskies first baseman Jesy Wrataza dropped the throw on a ground ball by sophomore Krista Mele (California HS). A walk and passed ball advanced Mele to third base before she scored on a single to center field by sophomore Jackie Flores (California HS)...[

03.15.12 - Cerritos stunned by walk-off home run
After scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to draw to an 11-11 tie with host Mt. San Antonio College in a South Coast Conference game on Thursday, the team was rocked when Diane Gutierrez won the game with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 15-11 final score. The loss drops the Falcons to 17-7 on the year, while it was their first SCC loss (9-1) and leaves the team in a tie at the top of the standings with the Mounties...[more]

03.13.12 - Falcons stay undefeated in conference
The Cerritos College softball team remained undefeated in South Coast Conference action after they recorded a 12-4, five-inning win over host Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons (17-6 overall) remain on top of the conference standings with their 9-0 record and will travel on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. to face second place Mt. San Antonio College, who Cerritos defeated, 12-6 in their first meeting...[more]

03.12.12 - Shelby Blair named state's Athlete of the Month
Shelby Blair was named the state's Athlete of the MonthIn the 12 games over the course of February, Cerritos College freshman outfielder Shelby Blair (Lakewood HS) was virtually impossible to get out at the plate. As the Falcons were posting a 10-2 record during the month, Blair batted .486 (18-for-37) with 18 runs scored, along with eight doubles and 12 RBI. As a result, Blair was named the California Community College Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Month. Blair, who has helped the Falcons to the #11-ranking in the state, saw her 11-game hitting streak come to an end in the final game of the month, which included a trio of three-hit games, including three doubles in a conference win over East Los Angeles. In addition to her success at the plate, Blair was perfect in the outfield and also recorded an outfield assist.

A week into the month of March, Cerritos is 15-4 on the year, with Blair one of three regulars batting over .400 on the year, as she is hitting at a .429 clip, and leads the team in runs scored (24), doubles (10) and triples (3). She has also driven in 19 runs, which is third on the team and has not committed an error in the outfield...[more]

03.09.12 - Cerritos swept by top-ranked Canyons
Cerritos was swept by top-ranked College of the CanyonsHosting top-ranked College of the Canyon in a non-conference double-header on Saturday, the Cerritos College softball team was defeated by scores of 4-0 and then 12-10 in eight innings. The two setbacks drops the team's record to 16-6 overall, while the Cougars improved to 17-0 on the year. Cerritos will now resume South Coast Conference action on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when they travel to Los Angeles Harbor College.

In the two games combined, a trio of Falcon pitchers surrendered 32 combined hits, while the team had just four hits in their shutout loss and drove in their 10 runs in the second game on just eight hits. Trailing 10-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Cerritos was able to send the game into extra innings after sophomore outfielder Maiya Tallakson (Redondo Union HS) drove in a run with a double, which preceded a throwing error by Canyons first baseman Shay Romero, which allowed two more runs to score. However, freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) was unable to hold off Canyons, who scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning and came away with the win...[more]

03.08.12 - Bats remain hot in win over Compton
For the second game in a row, the Cerritos College softball team needed to play only five innings, as they recorded a 15-2 South Coast Conference win over visiting ECC Compton Center on Thursday. The win improved the Falcons record to 16-4 overall, and they remain in first place in the SCC at 8-0. The team will now host College of the Canyons, the state's top-ranked team, in a doubleheader on Friday...[more]

03.06.12 - Falcons blow out El Camino, 13-0
The Cerritos College softball team opened up an early lead against host El Camino College on Tuesday with nine runs in the second inning and went on to post a 13-0 win in five innings in a South Coast Conference game  The win improved the Falcons to 7-0 in SCC play, while the state's 11th ranked team is now 15-4 on the season. They will host ECC Compton Center on Thursday at Nancy Kelly Field in another conference game...[more]

03.03.12 - Team shut out by Cypress for second time
Cerritos was limited to three hits in a 4-0 loss to Cypress.On two occasions this season, the Cerritos College softball team has been shut out and limited to just three hits in losing efforts. In both instances, it was Cypress College that shut down the Falcons, including their 4-0 score in a non-conference game on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field. The loss drops Cerritos to 14-4 on the season, while the Chargers improved to 12-3. On Tuesday, Cerritos resumes South Coast Conference play and takes their 6-0 record to El Camino for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

In their first meeting, it was the tandem of Courtney McGee and Monique Hernandez that limited Cerritos to three hits in a 9-0 score at Bakersfield College. On Saturday, McGee (5-2) went the distance, as she struck out four batters and stranded five Falcon runners. Freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS), who didn't pitch in the first meeting, surrendered 14 hits and all four runs to see her record fall to 13-3...[more]

 

03.01.12 - Cerritos powers way past LB City
Ally Catania clubs her second home run of the season, a two-run shot that helps the Falcons defeat Long Beach City, 7-3.Aside from one bad inning, Cerritos College freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) was able to keep Long Beach City College in check on Thursday in a 7-3 South Coast Conference win at Nancy Kelly Field. Cornejo (12-2) surrendered all three runs in the second inning, but saw her teammates power their way back with a pair of two-run home runs, along with a two-run double for their sixth conference win in a row and upped their season record to 14-3 overall. The Falcons will now host Cypress College in a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The Falcons opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an infield hit by sophomore shortstop Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS) that plated freshman outfielder Shelby Blair (Lakewood HS) after she reached base on a walk and advanced on a single and wild pitch. But the Vikings bounced back with three runs in the second inning. With one out, Cassie Garcia reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Alexxa Sanabria (Palm Springs HS), who dropped a tailing line drive. Melyssa Rivas followed with a single to center field, followed by a two-out RBI double from Reanna Guzman. Shanise Compton followed with a two-run double for a 3-1 LBCC lead...[more]
 

02.28.12 - Falcons bounce back for conference win
Last week the Cerritos College softball team played five games, which included a couple of big wins, but ended with the team exhausted and suffering a pair of losses in a row. The Falcons rebounded in their first game of the week with an 8-0 South Coast Conference win at Pasadena City College to improve their season record to 13-3, while they remain atop to standings with a 5-0 record. 02.25.12 - Team drops pair of games to end long weekend
After winning an emotionally draining 13-12 game on Friday, the Cerritos College softball team got back on the bus and drove to Bakersfield, where they played a pair of early games, with their first coming at 10:00 a.m. against the host Renegades, followed by a noon contest against powerful Cypress College. The Falcons dropped a 6-5 decision to Bakersfield (9-4) and concluded the weekend with a 9-0 loss to the Chargers (8-1). The team will now resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when they face Pasadena City College at Jackie Robinson Field...[more]

02.24.12 - Cerritos comes back for 13-12 victory
Down 7-0 after two innings, the Cerritos College softball team fought back to break a 12-12 tie with the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning in a non-conference game at Antelope Valley College on Friday afternoon. The Falcons started their comeback with five runs in the top of the third inning, while freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) drove in the winning run with a two-out base hit that scored freshman first baseman Andrea Arellano (Downey HS) from second base after her double. Cerritos (12-1) will now continue north to play a pair of games at Bakersfield College. 02.23.12 - Falcons pull away from East LA for 11th win
Coming off an emotional win against Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday, the Cerritos College softball team needed a few innings to get settled against East Los Angeles College in their South Coast Conference road game on Thursday. Clinging to just a 1-0 lead through the first four innings, the Falcons opened up for eight runs in the next two frames and posted a 9-1 win over the Huskies in a six-inning affair. The win was the ninth in a row for Cerritos, who improved to 11-1 on the season and 4-0 in SCC play. San Antonio College at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. The win improved the Falcons to 10-1 on the year and 3-0 in SCC play, while the Mounties fell to 7-3 and 2-1. Cerritos will play their next five games on the road, starting on Thursday when they travel to East Los Angeles College for a 3:00 p.m. conference game.

Codi Arends, the leadoff hitter for the Mounties drove an 0-2 offering from freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) for a home run to start the game, and followed with another run in the second inning and two more in the third inning. It only took one inning for the Cerritos College softball team to score all the runs they would need to post a South Coast Conference victory over Los Angeles Harbor College at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. 02.09.12 - Cerritos records mercy win over Fullerton
Alexxa Sanabria drive in five runs, as the Falcons defeated Fullerton, 10-2.Cerritos College sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria (Palm Springs HS) made the most of two plate appearances with the bases loaded, as she cleared them with a double in the second inning and followed that with a two-run double in the fifth inning, which helped the Falcons post a 10-2, five-inning win over Fullerton College in a non-conference game at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. The game was a make-up from two days ago after threatening weather postponed the contest. Cerritos (7-1) picked up their second win of the season over the Hornets (2-3) and it was their fifth victory in a row. The team will now travel to Palomar College tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference affair.

After jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead, the Falcons saw Fullerton score twice, but ended the game with a four-run fifth inning. A lead-off single by freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS), couple with sophomore outfielder Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly HS) reaching on a fielder's choice and walk to sophomore shortstop Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS) loaded the bases for Sanabria. She drilled a 1-1 offering from Hornets pitcher Vanessa Meza for a two-run, two-out double. 02.08.12 - Fielding miscue gives Falcons victory
Pitcher Lily Cornejo limited Riverside to an unearned run, as the Falcons posted a 2-1 win.Jackie Flores' (California HS) ground out in the seventh inning scored Krista Mele (California HS) with the winning run as the Cerritos College softball team edged Riverside City College, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Wednesday at Nancy Kelly Field. Cerritos (6-1) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning behind a walk to Mele, an error by Riverside City third baseman Chelsea Rosario and a single to right field by sophomore shortstop Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS). After Riverside pitcher Nichole Zink struck out sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria (Palm Springs HS) to get the first out of the inning, Flores hit a ground ball to Tiger shortstop Natalie Barrios, but instead of going home for the out she went to first, allowing the winning run to score.

The win was the third in a row for the Falcons, who will host Fullerton College at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in a rain make-up from Tuesday.

Zink (1-1), who struck out 14 Cerritos batters while walking four, suffered her first loss of the season. She allowed six hits. Riverside managed eight hits, three by clean-up hitter Courtney Brown, but the Tigers couldn't muster any offense behind her. After spotting Santiago Canyon College a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning, the Cerritos College softball team responded with four runs in the bottom of the stanza and held a 9-4 lead before holding on for a 9-7 non-conference win on Wednesday at Nancy Kelly Field. 01.31.12 - Falcons turn up the power against Grossmont
The Falcons hit five home runs in their 19-5 win over Grossmont.After struggling to generate any offense against Saddleback College on Saturday afternoon, the Cerritos College softball team found their groove against Grossmont College at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. The Falcons blasted five more home runs and clubbed 21 hits on the day, as they recorded a 19-5, five-inning non-conference win over the Griffins (2-3). Cerritos (3-1) will now host Santiago Canyon College at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in another non-conference contest.

Grossmont did take an early 1-0 lead after collecting a run on three hits off starting pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS). Vanessa McHugh led off the game with a double on the first pitch, and after a base hit by Lindsay Thorstenson, scored on a double-steal attempt that saw Thorstenson get thrown out after a rundown. Cerritos responded with four runs in the bottom of the stanza, which included an RBI ground out by freshman third baseman Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS), that scored sophomore Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS), who led off with a double. 01.28.12 - Game cancelled due to darkness
After the first two games of a three-game round-robin pushed the start of the final contest past 4:00 p.m., it was decided by both schools that the softball game between Cerritos College and Antelope Valley College was ruled as a cancelled contest. The ruling was made because it was not determined prior to the start of the day what the ruling would be should the third game not be completed due to darkness. 01.28.12 - Cerritos defeated in home opener
After opening the season with a pair of road wins on Friday, the Cerritos College softball team was unable to generate any offense in their home opening on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field against Saddleback College. The Falcons (2-1) clubbed five home runs in their second game of the season, but could only slap out four hits against the Gauchos (1-0) and dropped an 8-1 decision. Cerritos will now host Antelope Valley College at 3:00 p.m. in their second game of the day.

For Saddleback, they jumped on freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) for two runs in the top of the first inning, as Mandy Gutierrez delivered a two-run double that plated Christina Bolin and Chelsea Bertoglio. 08.05.11 - Jessica Lozano receives Nancy Kelly Scholarship
Jessica Lozano poses with Nancy Kelly after receiving Nancy Kelly Scholarship.Since 2003, former Cerritos College softball coach Nancy Kelly has been awarding a scholarship in her name to a sophomore softball player to help in the aid of purchasing textbooks and supplies after transferring to a four-year university. After a season where she was named the South Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned All-State recognition, Jessica Lozano (Banning HS) was named the recipient of this year's scholarship.

Those eligible for the scholarship must have played two seasons for the Falcon softball team and are required to submit a personal statement, as well as their transcripts and a letter of recommendation from at least one of their professors. Lozano turned in the required information and was notified by Kelly herself that she would be receiving the scholarship.

"I was really surprised and happy when Coach Kelly contacted me to let me know I would be getting the scholarship," said Lozano, who posted a 30-8 record this season and helped Cerritos to a 34-12 record and advanced to the Super Regional before being eliminated from the playoffs. "I knew that the scholarship was available, but I never thought I would get it. (Head coach) Kodee Murray gave the sophomores a flier with all of the requirements and I went ahead and did everything it asked."...[more]
