05.06.12 - Season comes to an end for Cerritos
After
opening the Southern California Regional Playoffs on
Saturday with a 5-4 loss to visiting Southwestern
College, the Cerritos College softball team knew
that they would need to win twice on Sunday to
advance to the Super Regional next weekend. The win
would not be in the cards for the #3-seeded Falcons
(29-10), who dropped a 15-7, 6-inning loss to the
#14-seeded Jaguars (27-12) at Nancy Kelly Field to
end their season. Cerritos trailed, 8-1 after the
first three innings, and got as close as 9-7 after
five innings. But that's when Southwestern scored
six times in the sixth inning to end the game on a
mercy rule.
Freshman pitcher
Lily Cornejo
(Paramount HS) had her worst game of the
season, allowing 15 runs on 19 hits, as she showed
signs of wearing down as the game progressed. Her
teammates were able to score six straight runs to
get to within 9-7, but could not finish the sixth
inning. Four different Southwestern players had
three hits on the day, while a pair of them -
Briana Albreksten and Alex Ross - drove in four
runs...[more]
05.05.12 - Falcons backs against the wall after
5-4 loss
Last season, the
Cerritos College softball team was seeded #4 for the
Southern California Regional Playoffs and opened the
post-season with a 9-2 loss to Bakersfield College.
The Falcons came back to win the next two games to
advance to the Super Regional. If they are to reach
the next round this year, they will have to defeated
#14-seeded Southwestern College twice on Sunday
after losing, 5-4 on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field.
The second game of the best-of three-series is
scheduled for noon, with a third game to be played
30 minutes at the conclusion of the second game, if
necessary.
The Falcons (29-9), seeded #3 for the playoffs,
trailed 5-1 before scoring single runs in the fifth,
sixth and seventh innings to get within striking
distance and ended up leaving 11 runners on base,
with seven of them in scoring position. The Panthers
(26-12) opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a
two-out, two-run home run by Alex Gallegs off freshman
starting pitcher
Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS).

sophomore shortstop
Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS) opened
the door for a pair of runs and the 5-1 deficit...[more]
04.30.12 - Players receive post-season honors
 When
a team wins the South Coast Conference championship,
posts a 29-8 regular season record and earns the
#3-seed for the upcoming Southern California
Regional Playoffs, there's bound to be some
post-season accolades bestowed upon the team. For
the Cerritos College softball team, that translated
into sophomore outfielder
Lauren Castrellon
(Downey HS) being named All-State, as well as
the conference's Player of the Year, while sophomore
second baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) and sophomore shortstop
Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS) both earned
All-Southern California and 1st Team All-SCC honors.
In addition, head coach Kodee
Murray was named the conference's Coach of
the Year, while five other players garnered
all-conference recognition.
Castrellon, who earned 1st Team All-SCC and
All-State Tournament honors in her freshman year
(2009), leads the Falcons in batting average (.455),
triples (6), RBI (41) and stolen bases (21), while Sanabria
batted .400 in the regular season to go along with
her team-high 16 doubles, four home runs and 40 RBI.

Cerritos College All-American pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley, who is a senior at
West Virginia Wesleyan University. For the third
week in a row, Ashley-Perez has been named the West
Virginia Intercollegiate Athlete Conference Pitcher
of the Week, as she continues to help her team
toward the post-season. Last week, Perez-Ashley, who
was named the Southern California Pitcher of the
Year and South Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year

with 23 strikeouts without allowing a walk. She
allowed just three hits and one run against Davis &
Elkins and followed that up with complete-game
shutouts against both Alderson-Broaddus and Fairmont
State.
On the year, Perez-Ashley is 16-3 on the year with a
1.84 ERA, as the Bobcats are 35-11 and won their

Trailing 5-3 heading into the sixth inning, the

defeat El Camino College. The Falcons (29-8,
20-1) responded with seven runs in the sixth inning
and came away with a 10-5 win for their fourth
championship in the last five years and first since
2010. The team will now wait until Saturday to find

title
For the fourth
time in the last five years, and first since 2010,
the Cerritos College softball team has clinched at
least a share of the South Coast Conference
championship on the strength of their 3-1 win over
Long Beach City College at Nancy Kelly Field on
Thursday. The Falcons (28-7, 19-1), who lead second
place Mt. San Antonio College by one game with
one SCC game remaining, will travel to Cypress
College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference
game and then close out the regular season with a
3:00 p.m. conference game at El Camino College.
The SCC title is the fifth in the career of head
coach Kodee
Murray, while it marks the 10th
conference championship in school history.
Cerritos broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the
fifth inning, thanks to a two-run double by
sophomore outfielder
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
off Vikings (18-18, 12-8) pitcher Frances Campoy.
Freshman first baseman
Andrea
Arellano (Downey HS) led off
the inning by getting hit by a pitch, with freshman
catcher
Ally
Catania (Pacifica HS)
sacrificing pinch-runner Sacheen
Contreras (Warren HS) to
second base. A single by sophomore outfielder Maiya Tallakson

base on the throw to third base, set the table for
Castrellon...[more]

04.10.12 - Late rally results in 9-8 win over Mt.
SAC
With first place
in the South Coast Conference on the line, the
Cerritos College softball team scored five runs in
the bottom of the seventh inning against rival Mt.
San Antonio College to post a 9-8 win at Nancy Kelly
Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win moves the
Falcons (25-7, 16-1) into first place with four SCC
games remaining, while the Mounties dropped to 25-4
and 16-2. Cerritos will travel to East Los Angeles
College on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. contest, as they
try to move closer in securing their fourth
conference title in the last five seasons.
Trailing 3-0 after the first inning and 8-4 heading
into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Falcons
used a two-out, two-run double by sophomore third
baseman
Krista Mele (California HS) to
drive home the game-winning run and send the
Cerritos players running onto the field in
jubilation. Run-scoring singles by freshman catcher
Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) and
sophomore outfielder Maiya Tallakson
(Redondo Union HS) chased starting pitcher
Natalie Sanchez (13-2) in favor of Nicole Soltis.
She got sophomore outfielder
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
to ground out, but it scored a run to get the team
to within 8-7. That's when Mele drilled a 2-1
offering down the left field line, which scored two
runs and won the game...[more]
04.05.12 - Cerritos scores late runs to post win
Over the last
several games, the Cerritos College softball team
has needed to go through their batting order at
least once before their bats have come alive. In
their 9-1, six-inning South Coast Conference win
over Los Angeles Harbor College at Nancy Kelly Field
on Thursday, the Falcons led just 3-1 heading into
the sixth inning. By then, the batters had faced
Seahawks pitcher Natalie Ayala twice and responded
by posting six runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
The victory allowed Cerritos to stay within striking
distance of taking over first place in the SCC, as
they improved to 15-1, while the team is now 24-7 on
the year. The Falcons will host Mt. San Antonio
(16-1) at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a showdown for the
conference title...[more]
04.03.12 - Falcons blow out Compton, 15-1
It
took five batters for the Cerritos College softball
team to get their first hit against host ECC Compton
Center in their South Coast Conference game on
Tuesday. But once they got that hit, the Falcons
were able to put up big numbers, as they recorded a
15-1 win on Tuesday, while slapping out 16 hits,
with 11 of them going for extra bases. The win
improves the team's record to 14-1 in conference
play and 23-7, as they prepare to host Los Angeles
Harbor College at 3:0 p.m. on Thursday...[more]
03.29.12 - One big inning enough to produce win
In three of the
four innings they batted, the Cerritos College
softball team did not collect a single hit and had
just two base runners. But in the second inning, the
Falcons scored 10 runs, which would be all the
offense needed in a 10-0 South Coast Conference win
over El Camino College on Thursday afternoon at
Nancy Kelly Field. The win keeps Cerritos in first
place in the conference with a 13-1 record, while
they improved to 22-7 overall. The team will travel
to Compton on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. game against ECC
Compton Center.
In that huge inning, sophomore shortstop
Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS) started
it with a solo home run, her sixth of the season,
followed by singles from sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) and freshman first
baseman
Andrea
Arellano (Downey HS). Freshman
catcher
Ally
Catania (Pacifica HS)
delivered an RBI double before sophomore outfielder
Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly
HS) drew a walk. Sophomore outfielder
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
added an RBI single, with sophomore third baseman
Krista Mele (California HS)
driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. A walk to
freshman outfielder
Shelby
Blair (Lakewood HS) chased
starter Jacklyn Peyrefitte for Marissa Merced, who
was met by a three-run double from sophomore
designated player
Jackie
Flores (California HS). Sanabria

College softball team hit three home runs, including
a grand slam by sophomore
Courtney Priddie
(Long Beach Poly HS), to help propel the
team to a 13-1 South Coast Conference win in five
innings at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday afternoon.
With the three bombs, the Falcons (19-7, 11-1) have
now hit 29 home runs on the season, but the power
didn't come from the team's regular big hitters.
They will look to add to that total on Friday, when
they travel to Citrus College for a 2:30 p.m.
non-conference game.
In the bottom of the first inning, freshman
outfielder
Shelby Blair (Lakewood HS),
who's known for her ability to spray the ball to all
sides of the field, launched her first home run of
the season, a two-run shot to give the Falcons an
early 2-0 advantage. In the second inning, freshman
first baseman
Andrea
Arellano (Downey HS) tagged
Lancers pitcher Kayla Moore (4-8) for a solo home
run, her third of the season. But the big blast was
a grand slam by Priddie as part of a seven-run third
inning. The round-tripper was just her second of the
season...[more]
03.20.12 - Falcons wear down East LA, 9-1
It took a few

bats were able to wear down visiting East Los
Angeles College in a South Coast Conference game at
Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. The Falcons, who
improved to 10-1 in the SCC and 18-7 overall, scored
a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, but
used a five-run fifth inning to put the game out of
reach. Cerritos will now host Pasadena City College
on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in another conference
contest.
In addition to the run support, the Huskies (9-16,
4-7) also committed five errors on the day, which
led to five of the runs being unearned. It started
in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff
hitter
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
was safe at first base on a fielding error by East
LA pitcher Janessa Martinez (5-4). After stealing
second base, the aggressive Castrellon scored from
second base when Huskies first baseman Jesy Wrataza
dropped the throw on a ground ball by sophomore

the Month
In
the 12 games over the course of February, Cerritos

out at the plate. As the Falcons were posting a 10-2
record during the month, Blair batted .486
(18-for-37) with 18 runs scored, along with eight
doubles and 12 RBI. As a result, Blair was named
the California Community College Athletic

win
It only took one
inning for the Cerritos College softball team to
score all the runs they would need to post a South
Coast Conference victory over Los Angeles Harbor
College at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. The
Falcons scored nine times in the bottom of the third
inning and went on to a 9-1 mercy rule win in five
innings over the Seahawks. Cerritos (9-1, 2-0) will

02.09.12 - Cerritos records mercy win over
Fullerton
Cerritos College
sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) made the most of two
plate appearances with the bases loaded, as she
cleared them with a double in the second inning and
followed that with a two-run double in the fifth
inning, which helped the Falcons post a 10-2,
five-inning win over Fullerton College in a
non-conference game at Nancy Kelly Field on
Thursday. The game was a make-up from two days ago
after threatening weather postponed the contest.
Cerritos (7-1) picked up their second win of the
season over the Hornets (2-3) and it was their fifth
victory in a row. The team will now travel to
Palomar College tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m.
non-conference affair.
After jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead, the Falcons
saw Fullerton score twice, but ended the game with a
four-run fifth inning. A lead-off single by freshman
catcher
Ally
Catania (Pacifica HS), couple
with sophomore outfielder
Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly
HS) reaching on a fielder's choice and walk to
sophomore shortstop
Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS) loaded
the bases for Sanabria. She drilled a 1-1 offering
from Hornets pitcher Vanessa Meza for a two-run,
two-out double. Sophomore designated player Maiya Tallakson
(Redondo Union HS) ended the game where her
line drive to centerfielder Aubrey Formano deflected
off her glove, driving in two more runs for the
mercy win...[more]
02.08.12 - Fielding miscue gives Falcons victory
Jackie
Flores' (California HS) ground
out in the seventh inning scored
Krista Mele
(California HS) with the winning run as the
Cerritos College softball team edged Riverside City
College, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Wednesday
at Nancy Kelly Field. Cerritos (6-1) loaded the
bases in the bottom of the seventh inning behind a
walk to Mele, an error by Riverside City third
baseman Chelsea Rosario and a single to right field
by sophomore shortstop
Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS). After
Riverside pitcher Nichole Zink struck out sophomore
second baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) to get the first out of
the inning, Flores hit a ground ball to Tiger
shortstop Natalie Barrios, but instead of going home
for the out she went to first, allowing the winning
run to score.
The win was the third in a row for the Falcons, who
will host Fullerton College at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday
in a rain make-up from Tuesday.
Zink (1-1), who struck out 14 Cerritos batters while walking
four, suffered her first loss of the season. She
allowed six hits. Riverside managed eight hits,
three by clean-up hitter Courtney Brown, but the
Tigers couldn't muster any offense behind her.
Quintana started the scoring for the Falcons in the
bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, and
the Falcons also loaded the bases in the sixth
inning before pushing across the winning run in the
seventh...[more]

01.31.12 - Falcons turn up the power against
Grossmont
After struggling

Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. The Falcons blasted
five more home runs and clubbed 21 hits on the day,
as they recorded a 19-5, five-inning non-conference
win over the Griffins (2-3). Cerritos (3-1) will now
host Santiago Canyon College at 3:00 p.m. on
Wednesday in another non-conference contest.
Grossmont did take an early 1-0 lead after
collecting a run on three hits off starting pitcher

first pitch, and after a base hit by Lindsay
Thorstenson, scored on a double-steal attempt that
saw Thorstenson get thrown out after a rundown.

the stanza, which included an RBI ground out by
freshman third baseman Ariana
Mejia (Gahr HS), that scored

01.28.12 - Game cancelled due to darkness
After the first two games of a three-game
round-robin pushed the start of the final contest
past 4:00 p.m., it was decided by both schools that
the softball game between Cerritos College and
Antelope Valley College was ruled as a cancelled
contest. The ruling was made because it was not
determined prior to the start of the day what the
ruling would be should the third game not be
completed due to darkness. At the time it became too
dark to continue the game, the Falcons held a 6-5
lead over the Marauders after four completed
innings...[more]

their second game of the season, but could only slap
out four hits against the Gauchos (1-0) and dropped
an 8-1 decision. Cerritos will now host Antelope
Valley College at 3:00 p.m. in their second game of
the day.
For Saddleback, they jumped on freshman pitcher
Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS)
for two runs in the top of the first inning, as
Mandy Gutierrez delivered a two-run double that
plated Christina Bolin and Chelsea Bertoglio. It was

08.05.11 - Jessica Lozano receives Nancy Kelly
Scholarship
Since
2003, former Cerritos College softball coach
Nancy Kelly has been awarding a scholarship
in her name to a sophomore softball player to help
in the aid of purchasing textbooks and supplies
after transferring to a four-year university. After
a season where she was named the South Coast
Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned All-State
recognition, Jessica Lozano (Banning
HS) was named the recipient of this year's
scholarship.
Those eligible for the scholarship must have played
two seasons for the Falcon softball team and are
required to submit a personal statement, as well as
their transcripts and a letter of recommendation
from at least one of their professors. Lozano turned
in the required information and was notified by
Kelly herself that she would be receiving the
scholarship.
"I was really surprised and happy when Coach Kelly
contacted me to let me know I would be getting the
scholarship," said Lozano, who posted a 30-8 record
this season and helped Cerritos to a 34-12 record
and advanced to the Super Regional before being
eliminated from the playoffs. "I knew that the
scholarship was available, but I never thought I
would get it. (Head coach) Kodee Murray
gave the sophomores a flier with all of the
requirements and I went ahead and did everything it
asked."...[more]
