Sophomore pitcher Alex
Castillo (St. Joseph HS) scattered five
hits to lead the Cerritos College softball team to a
5-0 non-conference win against College of the
Canyons at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. The
shutout was the second of the week for Castillo, who
is now 5-2 on the season, while the Falcons are now
6-2. The team will now enter the Green and Gold
Tournament this weekend at Bill Barber Park in
Irvine and will face Saddleback (11:00 a.m.) and San
Joaquin Delta (2:00 p.m.) on Saturday and then come
back to go up against Bakersfield (11:00 a.m.) and
Golden West (5:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
The Falcons scored single
runs in the first and third innings before adding
three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put it
away. Sophomore center fielder
Mayra
Oliden (Lincoln HS) led off the first
inning with a base hit and was moved to second on a
sacrifice by sophomore second baseman
Joanna
Navarro (South Gate HS). After the
second out was recorded, sophomore catcher
Melissa
Robledo (St. Joseph HS) drove home
her fourth run of the season with a single.
Oliden got the offense
going in the bottom of the third with a one out base
hit and a stolen base. After a fly ball out,
Castillo helped her cause with an RBI single, while
freshman designated player
Jackie
Jaime (St. Paul HS) drove in two runs
in the sixth inning with a base hit. Castillo opened
the inning by reaching first on an error and was
removed for pinch-runner
Adriana
Venegas (Santa Fe HS). After freshman
third baseman
Heather
Leonhard (Lakewood HS) doubled,
freshman right fielder
Leilani
Agatep (Artesia HS) drove in a run
with a base hit.
Castillo was in command
of the game the entire way, as she struck out eight
and allowed only one runner to get past first base.
In the top of the fourth inning, with the Falcons
leading 2-0, Cougar third baseman Cassandra Neilson
led off the a double. After she was sacrificed to
third base, Castillo got the next batter to ground
out. After a walk, the inning came to a close on a
ground ball to freshman shortstop
Nycole
Ortega (St. Paul HS), who made
several solid defensive plays. |
