For the second time this season, the Cerritos College softball team posted a shutout win against cross-town rival Long Beach City College in a South Coast Conference game. The Falcons, who won, 1-0 back on March 15, registered a 2-0 win at home against the Vikings Tuesday afternoon. The victory improved Cerritos to 23-8-1 on the season and are now 6-3 in SCC play, while LBCC slipped to 16-16 overall and 4-4 in conference action. The Falcons will now travel to Cuesta College on Saturday to face Riverside Community College (1:00 p.m.) and the host Cougars (3:00 p.m.) in a pair of non-conference games.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, as freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) drew a two-out walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Vikings pitcher Sarah Frudakis. Freshman third baseman Katie Colln (Mayfair HS) followed by drilling a 2-2 pitch into right-center field for an RBI.
In the fifth inning, Cerritos picked up an insurance run, as Colln tripled down the right field line with two outs and was driven in on a base hit by freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS). Navarro also threw a two-hitter against the Vikings to improve her record to 18-4 on the season.
The only real threat by Long Beach City came in the third inning, as left fielder Jessica Amador led off with a base hit and stole second base. After a ground ball by Linda Diller advanced Amador to third base, she was cut down at home plate when Christina Garcia grounded to Guadagno, who threw to freshman catcher Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) for the out. Lomeli was playing her second game in a row behind the plate due to the injury to freshman Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS).
On the day, Navarro limited Long Beach City to just two hits and struck out seven, while Frudakis allowed four hits in the loss. After the hit by Amador, Navarro set down 13 straight batters to end the game.
