The Cerritos College softball team scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run from freshman second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) and went on to defeat Cuesta College, 4-1 on Saturday in the second of two games that day. Earlier in the day, the Falcons saw a 2-0 lead against Riverside slip away when they hot a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning and posted a 4-2 win against Cerritos. With the split of the two games, the Falcons are now 25-9-1 on the season and will resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday when they host first place Mt. San Antonio College at 3:00 p.m.
In the win over Cuesta, Martin Del Campo drove home freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS), who reached on a walk, and freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS), who was on after a fielder's choice. The three-run blast would hold up against the Cougars, as Navarro allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out five. In four of the innings, Cuesta has runners in scoring position, but she was able to get out of each inning unharmed.
The Falcons picked up an insurance run in the seventh inning after freshman third baseman Katie Colln (Mayfair HS) doubled with one out and then came home on an error by the Cuesta second baseman on a ball hit by freshman catcher Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS). on the day, Martin Del Campo and Colln each had two hits to lead the team.
Cerritos took a 2-0 lead over Riverside in the first game of the day after Guadagno opened the bottom of the first inning with a base hit. After she was sacrificed over by Colln, Navarro drove her home with a single to right-center field. In the bottom of the third inning, Guadagno opened the inning by reaching base on an error and then stole second base. After walks to Colln and Navarro, Lomeli recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly. After the third inning, only two batters reach base against the Tiger defense.
Riverside scored all four of their runs against Navarro in the top of the fifth inning, with the big hit being a three-run home run from Stephany Aguilar, which preceded an RBI single from Valerie Brown.
