One of the toughest weather elements to deal with is wind and the Cerritos College softball did their best to use it to their advantage. The Falcons were the beneficiary of a couple of wind-blown hits and turned that into an 8-0 win in five innings against Pasadena City College in a South Coast Conference game played at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday. With the victory, Cerritos is now 26-9-1 on the year and 8-3 in conference action, while the Lancers fell to 5-26 and 2-10. The team will continue to try and hold onto second place in the SCC when they host El Camino College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
In addition to the wind aiding the team, Cerritos took advantage of four passed balls, three of which directly led to runs. In the bottom of the second inning, freshman first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) led off with a double and advanced to third on an error by Lancer first baseman Evelyn Bocanegra on a ball hit by freshman second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS). After an out was recorded, freshman third baseman Katie Colln (Mayfair HS) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Freshman outfielder Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS) drove in the first run of the game with a base hit, but Martin Del Campo was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.
The Falcons picked up five more runs in the third inning, as the Lancers committed two errors and catcher Heather Hechter had difficulty behind the plate. With one out, freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) was hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a passed ball. After freshman catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) reached on an error, she stole second base before Guadagno came home on a passed ball. On that play, Pasadena City tried to cut down Garcia, but another error allowed her to score. Freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) was then walked and then moved to third on a double by Lomeli. Yet another passed ball allowed Navarro to score before Martin Del Campo powered a home run through the wind to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead.
Navarro improved her season pitching record to 21-5 after allowing the Lancers just one hit, a double by Jessica Torres in the fourth inning. She also struck out five and walked just one.
Martin Del Campo went on to drive in another run in the fourth inning, while a passed ball allowed the final run of the game to score. The contest was called due to the eight-run mercy rule after the Lancers batted in the top of the fifth inning.
