Freshman infielder Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) singled home freshman catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) from second base in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Cerritos College softball team to a 7-6 South Coast Conference win over El Camino College at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons, ranked #4 in Southern California and #8 in the state, hold on to second place in the conference with a 9-3 mark, while they are now 27-9-1 overall. The Warriors dropped to 11-20 overall and 4-8 in the SCC. On Thursday, Cerritos will travel to Long Beach City College to face the Vikings at 3:00 p.m. LBCC sits two games behind the Falcons in conference action.
The game was extended to the bottom of the seventh inning after the Warriors scored three times in the top of the stanza off freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS). Two Falcon errors helped El Camino along, while a two-out two-run double by Amber Angel tied the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Garcia and freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) each singled with one out. Lomeli followed by hitting the first offering by Ginger Martinez into right-center field. Warrior right fielder Lisa Omoto dove for the ball but couldn't come up with it, while Kasey Martinez's throw from center field was too late to get Garcia, who scored the winning run.
After the Falcons picked up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, one on an RBI double from Lomeli, followed by an error which allowed her to score, El Camino scored the next three runs to take the lead. Cerritos responded with three in the bottom of the third inning, as Guadagno clubbed an RBI double, while Lomeli added a sacrifice fly. The third run came home on an El Camino error.
On the day, Lomeli went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI, while Garcia and Guadagno each had two hits. For El Camino, Angel was 3-for-4 with four RBI.
