The Cerritos College softball team continued their hot hitting, as they produced 11 hits in posting a 6-1 South Coast Conference win against East Los Angeles at Nancy Kelly Field on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons, ranked #6 in Southern California and #11 in the state, improve to 29-9-1 overall and are locked in at second place in the SCC at 11-3, while the Huskies fall to 11-30 overall and 3-11. The two will conclude their regular season tomorrow at East Los Angeles in a 3:00 p.m. game.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Falcons put three runs on the board and never looked back. With one out, freshman catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) reached base on a fielding error by Huskie third baseman Socorro Sanchez. Freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) followed with a base hit before freshman first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) drove in the first run with a single. After an infield hit by freshman second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) loaded the bases, freshman designated hitter Charlee Cox (Warren HS) singled to left field to drive in a run. A bad throw by Rebecca Lobos from the outfield allowed the third run if the inning to come home.
Navarro, who picked up three more hits on the day to push her season batting average to .521, went the distance to earn her 24th pitching win, as she limited East LA to just three hits while striking out nine. In addition to her impressive season batting average, she is also 24-5 on the mound with a 0.86 ERA, while she is also batting a sweltering .632 in conference games.
In the bottom of the second inning, Navarro gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead after she laced a hard double off the wall to score freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS), who reached base on an infield single and stole second base. Both Guadagno and Navarro picked up RBI hits in the fourth inning to round out the team's scoring. Guadagno and freshman outfielder Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS) each had two hits to compliment Navarro's three hits.
