Cerritos
College
freshman
pitcher
Jessica
Navarro
(South
Gate HS)
seems to
have a knack
for being in
the right
place at the
right time.
On Friday
afternoon in
the
Tri-County
Tournament,
held at
Nancy Kelly
Field at
Cerritos,
Navarro
slapped a
2-1 pitch
into
right-center
field to
drive home
freshman
shortstop
Jenel
Guadagno
(Warren
HS)
with the
winning run
in the
bottom of
the eight
inning.
Additionally,
Navarro
improved her
pitching
record to
11-4 with
the victory.
The win by
the Falcons
improved
their season
record to
14-7-1,
while the
Dons dropped
to 16-13. On
Saturday,
Cerritos
will host
Moorpark
College at
11:00 a.m.
in their
only
action.,
while Santa
Ana doesn't
play again
until
Sunday.
After
seven
innings, the
game moved
to the
international
tiebreaker
rule, which
places the
person who
made the
last out in
the previous
inning at
second base
to start the
stanza. For
Santa Ana,
Cheyenne
Ryan opened
the inning
on second
base and was
not advanced
on a ground
ball by
Heather
Hamilton to
first base.
The next
batter,
Diana
Quezada,
reached base
on an
infield
single,
which put
runners at
first and
second base.
Vivian
Torres then
grounded out
to second
base, but on
the play,
Falcon first
baseman
Stephanie
Lomeli
(Montebello
HS)
tried to cut
down Ryan at
third base
and threw
the ball
away,
allowing the
run to
score.
For the
Falcons in
the bottom
of the
eighth
inning,
freshman
third
baseman
Katie Colln
(Mayfair
HS),
who was
thrown out
at home for
the third
out in the
seventh
inning,
started at
second base.
Freshman
outfielder
Amber
Cardona
(Schurr
HS)
sacrificed
her to third
before a
base hit up
the middle
by Guadagno
drove home
Colln. After
a sacrifice
moved
Guadagno to
second base,
Navarro
ended the
game with
her hit.
Cerritos
was held in
check by
Dons pitcher
Ashley
Perdue
through the
first five
innings and
didn't get
their first
hit until
the sixth.
As for
Navarro, she
allowed four
hits on the
day and
struck out
five.
