The Cerritos College softball team jumped out to an early 9-1 lead in the South Coast Conference game at El Camino College on Thursday afternoon and finished it in five innings with an 11-2 victory. The win by the Falcons, their sixth in a row, improves their season record to 19-7-1, while they are now 5-3 in SCC action. The team will now compete in the Ventura Tournament and face Cypress College (11:45 a.m.) and Allan Hancock College (4:45 p.m.) on Saturday and then square off against College of the Canyons (2:00 p.m.) and Riverside College 9:45 p.m.) on Sunday.
In their six-run second inning, the Warriors helped the Falcons with three errors and a bases loaded balk, which helped account for all of the runs. Freshman designated hitter Charlee Cox (Warren HS) had three RBI in the game, which included run-scoring singles in the first and second inning, along with a ground out in the third that brought home a run. Freshman pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) was walked three times in the game and drilled a solo home run, her seventh of the season.
Freshman shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) got on base three times with base hits, while freshman outfielder Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS) had her first two-hit game of the season and also stole a base. Freshman second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI double, while Navarro earned her 15th win by allowing just two runs (one unearned) and struck out seven.
