Cerritos
College sophomore pitcher
Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS)
tossed a one-hitter, as the Falcons posted a
six-inning, 10-0 South Coast Conference victory
at Pasadena City College on Tuesday. The win
improved the Falcons record to 29-4 on the year
and they remained in a tie for first place with
a 9-2 mark, while the Lancers fell to 11-18
overall and 4-7 in the conference. Cerritos will
now play their eighth game in a row on the road
on Thursday when they travel to El Camino
College for a 3:00 p.m. conference game. The
Falcons, who are in the middle of a 12-game road
trip, have posted a 5-2 record through the first
seven games.
It didn't take
long for Cerritos to get on the board, as
sophomore outfielder
Capree Williams (Paramount
HS/Bethune-Cookman
University) opened the game with a single
and quickly stole second base. She followed that
with a swipe of third base, and when Lancer
catcher Veronica Peru threw the ball away,
Williams came home to score.
With the game
still 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, the
Falcons picked up their offense, as they scored
four times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and
three more in the sixth. Williams was once again
at the forefront of the offense in the fourth,
as her two-run double scored sophomore
designated hitter
Charlee Cox (Warren HS)
and sophomore second baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St.
Joseph HS), who both singled. Martin Del
Campo's base hit drove in sophomore first
baseman
Stephanie
Lomeli (Montebello HS),
who had previously doubled home sophomore
catcher
Nadine
Garcia (Mayfair HS).
Lomeli gave the team a 7-0 lead with a
two-run home run in the fifth inning, while
freshman pinch-hitter
Carli Walters (Cathedral
City HS) doubled home two more in the
sixth. Sophomore shortstop
Jenel
Guadagno (Warren HS)
also collected an RBI single. Of the team's 15
hits on the day, seven went for extra bases.
As for
Navarro, she faced just two batters over the
minimum, with the only hit she allowed coming in
the first inning. She also struck out six and
didn't walk any batters, as she collected her
16th win of the year.
