The
Cerritos College softball team scored two
runs in the top of the first inning and it
proved to be enough, as the Falcons posted a
3-1 South Coast Conference road win against
El Camino College on Thursday. The victory
kept Cerritos in a first place tie with a
10-2 record, while they are now 30-4 on the
season, marking the second year in a row and
sixth time in school history the team has
won 30 or more games.
In the top
of the first inning, sophomore outfielder
Capree
Williams (Paramount
HS/Bethune-Cookman
University) led off with a base hit and
stole second. Sophomore shortstop
Jenel
Guadagno (Warren HS)
followed with a base hit of her own and
stole second to put runners at second and
third. Sophomore pitcher
Jessica Navarro (South Gate
HS) and freshman outfielder
Jennifer Salas (California
HS) each followed with RBI singles for
a 2-0 Falcon lead.
Navarro
was cruising through the first four inning,
but worked out of a jam with runners and
second and third with two outs by getting
Ashley Gomez to ground out to end the
threat. The only run Navarro (17-4) allowed
was a solo home run to Amber Angel, but
Cerritos responded with a single run in the
seventh inning.
Williams
drove in freshman outfielder
Audrey
Leyva (Bishop
Amat HS) from second base with a
base hit to round out the scoring. On the
day, the Falcons had seven hits, with
sophomore second baseman
Vanezza
Martin Del Campo (St.
Joseph HS) collecting two in the win.
