Heading into the final three games of the
regular season, the Cerritos College
softball team tuned up with a pair of
non-conference wins over the weekend. The
Falcons (33-4) defeated Chaffey College,
15-7 and then followed with a 9-1 victory
over Citrus College. The team will now
travel to Antelope Valley College on
Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. before finishing off
their South Coast Conference schedule
against the two teams that are trying to
supplant them out of first place. On
Thursday, the 3rd-ranked Falcons
(11-2 in SCC) will host Long Beach City
College (10-3; ranked #7 in the state) and
then close out the regular season hosting
Mt. San Antonio College (10-3; ranked #8)
next Tuesday.
The
team had their struggles against Chaffey
before pulling away with an eight-run fifth
inning. After getting ahead 6-4 on a bases
loaded triple by sophomore shortstop
Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) in
the bottom of the fourth inning, the
Panthers responded with three runs of their
own in the top of the fifth to regain the
lead, 7-6. But Cerritos used seven hits and
an error to account for their eight runs.
With the bases loaded, the Falcons received
run-scoring singles from sophomore first
baseman
Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS),
sophomore outfielder
Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
and sophomore outfielder
Capree Williams (Paramount
HS/Bethune-Cookman University). Guadagno
then drove in a run with a fielder’s choice,
while freshman outfielder
Jennifer Salas (California HS)
and sophomore catcher
Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS)
each adding two-run base hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Korrin Soldan (Katella HS),
who struggled at times in the game, went on
to win her 14th game of the
season without a loss. She allowed all seven
runs (four earned) and shut the Panthers
down in the final inning after the Falcons
exploded into the lead.
The
offense continued to pound out hits, as they
collected 12 more against Citrus, in winning
9-1. The Falcons broke a 1-1 tie with six
runs in the top of the second inning, with
freshman pitcher
Liz Reveles (Mayfair HS)
improving her record to 2-0, as she allowed
just two hits and struck out two.
In
the second inning, both Williams and
Guadagno helped break the game open with
two-run singles, while Lomeli and sophomore
designated hitter
Charlee Cox (Warren HS) each
added run-scoring base hits in the fourth
inning to close out the scoring.
With
just three regular season games remaining,
numerous records have already been broken.
Sophomore pitcher
Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) has
broken the school record for career hits
(125), while she has shattered the career
RBI mark with 111, with the old record being
79. Additionally, she has also broken her
own record for most career home runs (22),
doubles (29), runs scored (84), while as a
pitcher she now holds the record for career
wins (51). Navarro has also broke her single
season records for most RBI (57), while
Williams has the new singe-season stolen
base record with 39 swipes.
