After
finishing the regular season with a
share of the South Coast Conference
championship and a 35-5 record, the
Cerritos College softball team earned a
#2 seed for the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, which start next
Saturday. The Falcons will host
#15-seeded Chaffey College in a
two-out-of-three series, with the first
game slated for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The second game will be at noon on
Sunday, with a third game to follow, if
necessary. The Panthers finished in
second place in the Foothill Conference.
The
#2-seed is the second time in the tenure
of head coach
Kodee Murray that the
Falcons have received such a high seed,
with the other being in 2004. Last year,
Cerritos was the #4-seeded team and
advanced all the way to the state
championship game, where they were
defeated by Mt. San Antonio College. The
Falcons shared the conference title with
the Mounties this year.
Back
on April 12, Cerritos faced Chaffey
College and posted a 15-7 win in six
innings, which saw the team post an
eight-run fifth inning to put the game
out of reach. In that game, freshman
outfielder Jennifer Salas (California
HS) went 4-for-4 with a triple and three
RBI.
In
other Falcon softball news, sophomore
pitcher/third baseman
Jessica Navarro (South
Gate HS) was named the SCC Player
of the Year. Joining her on the 1st Team
All-SCC Team are sophomore catcher
Nadine Garcia (Mayfair
HS), sophomore shortstop
Jenel Guadagno (Warren
HS), sophomore second baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St.
Joseph HS), Salas and sophomore
outfielder
Capree Williams (Paramount
HS/Bethune Cookman University).
Selected to the 2nd Team were sophomore
first baseman
Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello
HS) and sophomore outfielder
Cecily Garcia (St.
Joseph HS).
