Last year, Cerritos College softball pitcher Korrin Soldan (Katella HS) spent little time in the circle and spent most games as the team’s starting right-fielder. But, after much hard work over the summer, she has proven to be a solid spot-starter in place of returning All-State pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS). After watching Navarro pitch the first two innings of the team’s 7-0 South Coast Conference opener on Tuesday, Soldan came on and retired all 15 batters she faced to run her record on the year to 6-0. As a team, the Falcons improved to 12-0 on the year and 1-0 in SCC play. They continue conference action on Thursday when they travel to El Camino College for a 3:00 p.m. contest. The Falcons jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead over the Lancers and never looked back, as they scored three times in the top of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Capree Williams (Paramount HS/Bethune Cookman University) led off with a base hit and stole second. Sophomore shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) followed with a walk before Navarro doubled them both home and moved to third base on the throw home. That put her in position to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS).
They increased their lead to 5-0 in the third inning, as Navarro singled and moved to second base on a fly ball by sophomore second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) that was dropped by right fielder Jessica Torres. After a walk to Lomeli loaded the bases, sophomore catcher Nadine Garcia (St. Joseph HS) singled home two runs. Guadagno picked up an RBI in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly, while sophomore third baseman Katie Colln (Mayfair HS) doubled in Garcia in the seventh inning for the final run.
As for Soldan, only one ball was hit out of the infield in her five innings of work, as Lauren Meza flew out to Williams in center field for the final out. Ten other outs were ground ball outs, while she struck out one.
