Cerritos College sophomore
softball player
Jessica Navarro (South
Gate), who helped lead
the Falcons to their second
state championship in school
history, was named the
California Community College
Athletic Association Female
Athlete of the Month for
May, 2008.
During
the month, Navarro went 8-0
(all playoff games) in the
circle and batted .423. For
her efforts in the state
tournament, Navarro was
named the Most Valuable
Player, while she was also
selected the State Player of
the Year, as well as the
National Fastpitch Coaches
Association (NFCA) Player of
the Year and South Coast
Conference Player of the
Year.
Over the
course of her eight pitching
victories, she threw a
perfect game against Chaffey
College in the 1st Round of
the Southern California
Regional Playoffs. Navarro
appeared in 49 innings
during the month and
finished with an 0.86 ERA
while she struck out 36 and
allowed just 29 hits against
some of the best teams in
the state. In the four state
tournament games, she posted
a 1.12 ERA, which included
back-to-back wins over Mt.
San Antonio College. At the
plate, Navarro batted
11-for-26 (.423) in the
post-season with 11 RBI, six
runs scored, five doubles
and a home run. In her
career at Cerritos College,
Navarro set six career
hitting and pitching
records, as well as eight
more single-season hitting
and pitching records.
