Cerritos College softball pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) pitched a one-hit shutout on Saturday morning to lead the Falcons to a 2-0 non-conference win at Nancy Kelly Field. It was the first of two games for Cerritos on the day, as they play host to College of the Canyons at 2:00 p.m.
Navarro (7-1) was tossing a no-hitter until the top of the sixth inning, when she surrendered a one-out bunt hit to Brelyn Bell. She recorded the next two outs and then pitched the seventh inning to register the win. Navarro also struck out four, while she walked two and committed a first-inning error.
It was defensive miscues that led to both Falcon runs, as the Hornets committed five in the game. In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore outfielder Capree Williams (Paramount HS/Bethune-Cookman University) led off with a single and advanced to third base on a double by sophomore shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS). After Navarro walked to load the bases, sophomore first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) grounded a ball to shortstop Ali Cano, who mishandled the ball, allowing Williams to score. That would be all the damage allowed on the inning, as Fullerton pitcher Brandi Escarzaga got sophomore second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) to hit into a fielder’s choice before sophomore catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) grounded into a double play to end the inning.
But in the fifth inning, an error by Hornet second baseman Nicole McCarthy opened the door for the Falcons second run. McCarthy’s throw to first base pulled Brittany Beltran off the bag, allowing Williams to reach base. Williams then stole second and third base and came home on a base hit by Navarro. Another double play ended the threat for Cerritos.
