There’s not much more than can be said about Cerritos College sophomore softball player Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS). She’s already set numerous records in her Falcon career, both as a pitcher and as a hitter. In Thursday’s South Coast Conference game against Pasadena City, Navarro set a new personal record, as she drove in seven runs, which included hitting two three-run home runs in the third inning, as Cerritos recorded a 12-2 five-inning victory. With the win, the Falcons are now 18-1 on the year and 5-1 in SCC play, while the Lancers fell to 7-10 overall and 2-4. The team will now host El Camino College next Tuesday. With the emergence of sophomore pitcher Korrin Soldan (Katella HS), Navarro hasn’t had to pitch nearly as many innings as she did last year, which may be helping her at the plate. After the seven- RBI game, Navarro has now driven in 34 runs in 19 games and she’s already clubbed seven round-trippers. Last year, she set a new school record with 13 home runs and 54 RBI.
As for Soldan, she pitched the first three innings and allowed one run on six hits and struck out two, to run her season record to 8-0. Last year, Soldan went 5-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 57 innings of work. She came out after three innings in favor of freshman Liz Reveles (Mayfair HS), who struck out the first two batters she faced and surrendered the other run on three hits.
The Falcons busted open a 1-1 game with 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning on 10 hits. After sophomore outfielder Capree Williams (Paramount HS/Bethune-Cookman University) led off with a single and stole second base, sophomore shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) drew a walk. Navarro then stepped up and drilled the first pitch over the right-center field fence. Sophomore first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) followed with a double before sophomore second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) singled. After a walk to sophomore catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) loaded the bases, freshman outfielder Jennifer Salas (California HS) collected an RBI single. A wild pitch brought home another run before freshman outfielder Audrey Leyva (Bishop Amat HS) doubled in two more. Williams singled in another run, while Navarro came up and clubbed another three-run shot off the new physical plant building over the left field wall.
Martin Del Campo went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Williams (three runs), Navarro and Salas each had two hits. For Pasadena City, Kimberly Aviles went 3-for-3, with Rachel Diaz getting two hits and Cynthia Martinez driving in both runs.
