The Cerritos College softball team ran their winning streak to nine games in a row with a pair of road non-conference wins on Sunday, just a day after they won two non-conference games at home the day before. The Falcons (23-1) posted wins over both Los Angeles Valley College (9-1) and Cuesta College (6-2). The team will now resume South Coast Conference action on Tuesday when they host East Los Angeles College.
After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, Cerritos responded with a single run in the top of the third inning before breaking the game open with six runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS) tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, which drove home sophomore outfielder Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS), who led off with a base hit. It was a leadoff single by Garcia in the fifth inning that started the six-run rally, with sophomore shortstop Jenel Guadagno (Warren HS) clubbing a two-run triple to drive in the first two runs of the inning. Freshman Jennifer Salas (California HS) also drove in two with a double, while sophomore Charlee Cox (Warren HS) collected an RBI double. In the sixth, both Guadagno and sophomore second baseman Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) each added an RBI.
Against the Cougars, Cerritos jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three in the second and two more in the third. Garcia collected a two-run single in the second, while Navarro and sophomore first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) each had and RBI in the third.
Navarro allowed two unearned runs in the circle, as she struck out four, while sophomore Korrin Soldan (Katella HS) opened the day with a one-hitter, as the lone run was unearned.
