For the second time this season, the Cerritos College softball team was shut out by cross-town rival Long Beach City College in a South Coast Conference game. In each of the meetings, Viking pitcher Sadie Barton didn't allow a walk and has combined to allow just seven hits to the Falcons, who dropped to 24-3 overall and 7-2 in SCC play. LBCC improved to 19-8 overall and 7-3 in conference action. It doesn't get any easier for the Falcons, who must now travel to Mt. San Antonio on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. game.
Long Beach broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Majella Friel led off with a base hit off sophomore pitcher Jessica Navarro (South Gate HS). After a sacrifice advanced the runner, Raelene Saldana drove in the game's only run with a base hit just inside the left field line.
As for the Falcons, they had a chance in the sixth inning to get on the board, but stranded runners as second and third base. With one out, sophomore catcher Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS) and Navarro each singled. Sophomore first baseman Stephanie Lomeli (Montebello HS) advanced the runners with a sacrifice, but freshman outfielder Jessica Salas (California HS) struck out looking to end the inning. On the day, Cerritos struck out 11 times.
