Looking to snap
a two-game losing streak, the Cerritos College softball
team was able to do just that against the team that
defeated them in the state championship game last
season. The Falcons came out on top of a thrilling 2-1
South Coast Conference game at Mt. San Antonio College
on Thursday afternoon, which locked the two teams in a
first place tie with an 8-2 record. The team will now
enter the Ventura Tournament this weekend.
The Falcons opened up a 2-0 lead on the Mounties, with
single runs in the third and fourth inning and had a
chance to add more in the fifth inning when they loaded
the bases with one out. In the third inning, sophomore
outfielder
Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS) drew a lead-off
walk. After two outs were recorded, sophomore catcher
Nadine Garcia
(Mayfair HS) singled, and took second base when they
throw went to third trying to cut down Cecily Garcia.
Sophomore pitcher
Jessica
Navarro (South Gate HS) followed with an RBI
single, giving the team a 1-0 lead.
The fourth inning started with sophomore second baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St. Joseph HS) leading
off with a base hit and advanced to second base when
Mountie pitcher Mandy Pongs committed a throwing error
on a ball hit back to her by freshman
Desiree Miera
(Downey HS). After a sacrifice advanced the runners,
Martin Del Campo stole home to put Cerritos up by two.
The Mounties scored their lone run in the fifth
inning, on a run-scoring single by Katie Baldwin. But on
the play, freshman
Jennifer Salas
(California HS) threw out Randi Baldwin at the plate
trying to score on the base hit. Mt. San Antonio
threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh
inning after Randi Baldwin singled and advanced to third
base on a throwing error by Salas with two outs. But
Navarro picked up her 13th win of the season when she
got Katie Baldwin to pop up for the final out of the
game. |
