The Cerritos
College softball team won three out of the four
games they played at the Ventura Tournament over the
weekend to run their season record to 28-4. But
their opening game, a 10-5 loss to #1-ranked Cypress
College, ended up being a record-setting
performance. Back in 1978, the Falcons opened the
season by winning their first 30 games en route to
the school's lone state championship and setting a
state record. But for the Chargers, they're win over
Cerritos gave them 31 wins to start the year, which
broke the Falcons state record.
In their other
games, the Falcons defeated Reedley College, 13-2 in
five innings, Glendale College (12-5) and San Diego
City College, 10-8 in a game that was ended in the
fifth inning due to the tournament's time limit.
Cerritos will now resume South Coast Conference play
on Tuesday when they travel to Pasadena City College
for a 3:00 p.m. game.
In the loss to
Cypress, Cerritos trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth
inning only to see the Chargers take advantage of
two errors to score six unearned runs and put
the game out of reach. However, the Falcons did
score three in the bottom of the sixth inning and
had the bases loaded before the third out was
recorded. Freshman outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) clubbed
a two-run home run in the fourth inning and saw two
runs come home on a ball thrown away in the seventh
inning.
The Falcons
collected 13 hits in their abbreviated game against
Reedley, as the duo of sophomore
Jessica
Navarro (South Gate HS) and
freshman
Liz
Reveles (Mayfair HS)
limited the Tigers to six hits with both runs being
unearned. At the plate, sophomore outfielder
Capree Williams (Paramount
HS/Bethune
Cookman University) had three hits,
scored three times and drove in two runs with a
double in the second inning. Sophomore catcher
Nadine Garcia (Mayfair HS)
powered out a two-run home run and also drove in a
run with a double, as she also scored three times,
while sophomore shortstop
Jenel
Guadagno (Warren HS)
added two singles, three runs and two stolen bases.
The offensive
continued to pound out hits, as they added 18 more
against Glendale, with Williams (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2
SB) and Salas (3-for-5, 2 runs) leading the way.
Navarro picked up a two-run single in the second
inning and added an RBI on a ground out in the
seventh, while the duo of sophomore first baseman
Stephanie
Lomeli (Montebello HS)
and sophomore second baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo (St.
Joseph HS) each had two hits and two RBI. In
the circle, sophomore
Korrin
Soldan (Katella HS)
remained undefeated on the year (12-0) with four
innings of work, while
Reveles threw the final three innings.
In the finale
against a much-improved San Diego City team, the
Falcons found themselves down, 7-3 heading into the
bottom of the fourth inning. But, a six-run inning
pulled them out, while a single run in the fifth was
tacked on before the game was halted due to the time
limit. Navarro was beat up for eight runs and 11
hits, but did help her cause with a two-run home run
in the first inning.
In the six-run
fourth inning, Del Campo and sophomore designated
hitter
Charlee Cox (Warren HS)
opened with base hits. Sophomore outfielder
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
followed with an RBI single, while Williams drove in
a run with a fielder's choice. After an RBI single
by
Guadagno, Salas clubbed a two-run triple,
followed by an RBI double from Nadine Garcia. An
error and a walk loaded the bases for Del Campo, who
gave the team a 9-8 lead with a walk. Salas
(4-for-4, 4 RBI) accounted for the final run with an
RBI double in the fifth.
