After sweeping through the two rounds of
the Southern California Regional
Playoffs, the Cerritos College softball
team will now embark on their next
adventure – the California Community
College Athletic Association State
Championships, which will take place at
Orange Terrace Park in Riverside from
Friday though Sunday. The Falcons
(39-5), who are seeded #2 in Southern
California, will open the eight-team,
double elimination tournament on Friday
at noon
against San Jose City (42-7), the
#3-seeded team from Northern California.
With a win, the team will play the
winner of the College of the Siskiyous-Long
Beach City winner at 5:00 p.m. on
Friday, while a loss will drop the
Falcons against the loser of the same
game at noon on Saturday.
The Jaguars, who advanced to the
state championships last year, won the
Coast Conference South Division and have
posted a 42-7 record on the year. The
game against the Falcons will mark their
first against a team from Southern
California this season.
As for Cerritos, they are the
co-champions of the South Coast
Conference and swept both Chaffey
College and Fullerton College in
regional play. In fact, three of the
teams from the South are from the SCC,
along with #3-seed Mt. San Antonio
College and #4-seed Long Beach City
College. Cypress College, who the
Falcons eliminated from the state
tournament last year, is the #1-seeded
team from the South. Cerritos reached
the championship game last year, but
were beaten by Mt. San Antonio.
