The Cerritos College
softball team moved one step
closer to their first
California Community College
Athletic Association state
championship on Friday
afternoon when they defeated
San Jose City College, 9-1
in their opening game at
orange Terrace Park in
Riverside. The Falcons
(40-5), seeded #2 in the
South, will now face the top
seed from Northern
California, College of the
Siskiyous (52-3), at 5:00
p.m. today. Siskiyous posted
a 1-0 win over Long Beach
City College in their
opening game. A win in their
game against College of the
Siskiyous will automatically
advance Cerritos into the
championship round, while a
loss will force them to have
to win two games on Saturday
to reach the championship
round. The win gives the
Falcons their 40th victory
of the year, breaking the
old record of 39, set last
season.
In the win, the Falcons
trailed 1-0 heading into the
bottom of the second inning,
but broke through with five
runs to take a commanding
lead. In the inning,
sophomore second baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo
(St. Joseph HS) led
off with an infield single
and then advanced to third
on a base hit down the right
field line by sophomore
first baseman
Stephanie Lomeli
(Montebello HS).
After Lomeli stole second
base, sophomore designated
hitter
Charlee Cox (Warren
HS) tied the game with
a base hit, with Lomeli
advancing to third base.
Sophomore
Cecily Garcia (St.
Joseph HS) came on to
pinch-run for Cox and stole
second base. Cerritos then
took a 2-1 lead when Lomeli
scored on a wild pitch from
Debbie Duran, which preceded
an infield hit by sophomore
outfielder
Capree Williams
(Paramount HS/Bethune
Cookman University).
The Falcons then pulled off
a double-steal, with Garcia
coming home for a 3-1 lead,
while an infield out by
sophomore pitcher
Jessica Navarro
(South Gate HS)
accounted for the fourth
run. It was a 5-1 advantage
after a Jaguar error allowed
sophomore shortstop
Jenel Guadagno
(Warren HS) to
score. Guadagno, who had
three hits and three RBI on
the day, singled in the
inning.
The five
runs was all Navarro would
need to improve her record
to 23-5 on the year. She
limited the Jaguars to just
five hits and struck out
seven batters, while the
offense provided her with 10
hits.
Cerritos
added two more runs in the
fourth inning, with San Jose
providing an error to help
along the way. After Cox
walked to lead off the
inning, Williams reached
base on an error, which
allowed Cox to advance to
third base. Williams then
stole second base, with
Guadagno following with a
two-run double. The Falcons
closed out the game in the
sixth inning with Williams
reaching base once again
thanks to an error. She
swiped her third base of the
game, which was followed by
another RBI double from
Guadagno. The game was ended
due to the eight-run mercy
rule after freshman
outfielder
Jennifer Salas
(California HS)
doubled in Guadagno.
