On the strength of their
8-0, five-inning win
over College of the
Siskiyous, the Cerritos
College softball team
has now advanced to the
championship semi-final
of the California
Community College
Athletic Association
Softball Championships,
which are being played
at Orange Terrace Park
in Riverside. The
Falcons (41-5), who
opened with a 9-1 win
over the #3-seed from
the North, San Jose City
College, continued their
torrid hitting, as they
took a 6-0 lead after
the first three innings
over the Giants (50-4),
the top seed from
Northern California.
Cerritos will now play
the winner of the Mt.
San Antonio
College-Cypress College
winner at 7:00 p.m. on
Saturday.
The game started in the
same fashion it did
against San Jose City,
as sophomore outfielder
Capree Williams
(Paramount
HS/Bethune Cookman
University) led off
with an infield single.
Just as she did three
times earlier in the
day, Williams stole
second and advanced to
third base on a throwing
error by Giants catcher
Nikki Kemper. With one
out, sophomore pitcher
Jessica Navarro
(South Gate HS)
grounded out to second
base, which allowed
Williams to score the
first run of the game.
In the second inning,
sophomore designated
hitter
Charlee Cox
(Warren HS)
singled with one out,
with sophomore
pinch-runner
Katie Colln
(Mayfair HS)
stealing second base
with two outs. That set
up Williams, who singled
to right field, which
scored Colln. The
unstoppable Williams
then stole second base
and eventually advanced
to third base on a wild
pitch. Sophomore
shortstop
Jenel Guadagno
(Warren HS)
cashed that run in with
a base hit to right
field. Before the inning
was over, Guadagno went
on to steal second base,
with Navarro driving her
in with a base hit up
the middle.
Speed has been the
team's most effective
tool, as they
swiped seven bases in
the win over San Jose
City and added five more
against College of the Siskiyous. Just as
important, the pitching
and defense have helped
the Falcons win their
first two games, as
Navarro limited the
Giants to just four hits
in the game, while
striking out four. She
only allowed one runner
to advance to second
base, while the defense
turned a double play to
end the fourth inning.
The offensive barrage
continued in the third
inning, as freshman
outfielder
Jennifer Salas
(California HS)
and sophomore second
baseman
Vanezza Martin Del Campo
(St. Joseph HS)
led off the inning with
consecutive base hits.
Sophomore first baseman
Stephanie Lomeli
(Montebello HS)
followed with a
run-scoring single,
while the second run of
the inning came when
freshman pinch-runner
Kayla Campo
(Mira Costa HS)
was caught stealing. On
the play Martin Del
Campo came home with
the second run of the
inning and a 6-0 lead.
The scoring concluded in
the top of the fifth
inning when sophomore
catcher
Nadine Garcia
(Mayfair HS)
led off with a walk.
Freshman pinch-runner
Audrey Leyva
(Bishop Amat HS)
then advanced to third
base on a double by
Salas. Leyva came home
on a wild pitch before
Lomeli drove in Salas
with a base hit.
In the game, Salas went
3-for-3 with two runs
scores, while Williams
added two hits and two
runs scored. Lomeli
drove in two runs with
her two hits, with Cox
also accounting for two
hits.
