Cerritos
College sophomore outfielder Jennifer Salas
(California HS) singled home two runners in the
top of the seventh inning, which turned out to
be the game-winning runs in a 4-3 South Coast
Conference win at Pasadena City College on
Thursday afternoon. The win improved the
conference-leading Falcons record to 11-1, while
they are 25-8-1 overall. Cerritos will now
compete in the San Diego City Tournament this
weekend.
Trailing 3-2
heading into the top of the seventh inning,
freshman outfielder
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
led off by reaching base on an error by Lancer
shortstop Rachel Diaz. Freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS)
was then hit by a pitch, while freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
sent a deep fly ball for an out. But, on the
play, both runners advanced a base, which set up
Salas for the game-winning hit.
Freshman
pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long
Beach Poly HS) then shut the Lancers down
in order in the bottom of the stanza to preserve
the win, her 18th of the season. On the day,
Perez-Ashley surrendered four hits, while only
one of the three runs she allowed was earned.
The Falcons
took a 2-1 lead after scoring single runs in the
third and fourth innings, before Pasadena City
responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of
the fifth inning. Cerritos missed a great
opportunity to add to their lone run in the
third inning, as they left the bases loaded.
Freshman designated hitter
Brandi Rummell (La Serna HS)
drove in a run in the fourth, and led the team
with two hits.
