Aside from a 4-3
loss to Saddleback College to open the San Diego
City Tournament, the Cerritos College softball team
won four of the five games they played over the
weekend. The wins give the Falcons a 29-9-1 record
on the year. The team looks to move another step
closer to winning the South Coast Conference
championship on Tuesday, as they host East Los
Angeles College at 3:00 p.m. Cerritos is currently
11-1 in the SCC with six more games to go and lead
second place Mt. San Antonio College by two games.
After the team
lost their second one-run game of the year to the
Gauchos, the Falcons won three straight games by the
mercy rule, 12-1 over Oxnard College, 10-2 over
Orange Coast College and 14-0 over Grossmont
College. Cerritos closed out the tournament by
holding on for a 4-3 win over Fullerton College.
In that game,
Cerritos opened by scoring all four of their runs in
the first inning. With two runners on base,
sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) singled
in a run, while freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) drove in a
pair with another base hit. The inning closed out
with freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) collecting
an RBI on a ground out.
The Hornets, who
scratched across a run in the fourth inning and two
more in the fifth (both unearned), had a rally in
the seventh inning against freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS). After recording the first two outs of
the inning, an error by freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS), followed by
a base hit and a walk loaded the bases. But Perez
ended the game when she got Jackie Taylor to fly
out.
There were several
big performances over the weekend, with freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) going
3-for-4 with three runs scored against Oxnard, while
freshman designated hitter
Brandi
Rummel (La Serna HS) drove in
four and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI,
with freshman pitcher
Joanna Avila (El
Rancho HS) pitching the final four innings of
the game and striking out seven.
After allowing
Orange Coast to open the game by scoring a run, the
Falcons led, 3-1 before a seven-run fourth inning
put the game out of reach. Sophomore third baseman
Desiree Miera (Downey HS)
drove in three runs in the inning, with Castrellon
(2-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Salmones (2-for-2, 2
runs, 2 RBI) each having good games. Avila threw the
first four innings to earn the win.
The bats really
came alive in the rout of Grossmont, as both Vaaulu
(2-for-2) and Salas (4-for-4) each drove in five
runs. In the game, Vaaulu tied the school record for
most home runs in a season (13), which was set by
Jessica Navarro in 2007. Freshman
second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) also went
3-for-4 with three RBI, while Perez-Ashley three a
four-hit shutout.
