On the strength of
their 5-1 South Coast Conference win at Mt. San
Antonio College on Thursday afternoon, the Cerritos
College softball team took a huge step toward
winning the conference title. With only four
conference games remaining, the Falcons are 13-1 in
the SCC and 31-9-1 overall and hold a 2 1/2 game
lead over Long Beach City and are three games ahead of Mt.
SAC. Cerritos can clinch at least a share of the
title on Tuesday when they host El Camino College in
a 3:00 p.m. game.
In the win over
Mt. San Antonio, freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) was dominant from the first inning.
After allowing a lead-off walk in the first inning,
Perez Ashley (21-5) allowed only two base runners
until the seventh inning, where the Mounties scored
their lone run. She saw her team turn a
double play in the first inning, while another
double play in the seventh helped shut down a
Mounties rally.
Freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) led off
the third inning with her 11th home run of the
season for a 1-0 lead. After a pair of singles by
freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) and freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS), sophomore
outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) gave the
team a 2-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly.
Cerritos added
three
big runs in the top of the seventh inning. A pair of
walks to sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) and Vaaulu
and a wild pitch put runners at second and third
base with two outs. Salas followed with a two-run
single, while freshman designated hitter
Brandi
Rummell (La Serna HS) closed
out the scoring with an RBI single.
