In one of their
largest offensive outbursts of the season, the
Cerritos College softball team scored 15 runs in the
fourth inning, as they registered a 24-0 South Coast
Conference win against El Camino College at Nancy
Kelly Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons
clinched at least a share of the conference title
with the win, as they improved to 14-1 in the SCC
and 32-9-1 on the year. The team will now look to
clinch the title outright when they travel to Long
Beach City College on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m.
contest.
Cerritos jumped
out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning, which
started with a leadoff walk to freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) and
followed with a home run by freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS),
her second of the year. Three more hits and two more
walks followed before the end of the stanza. The
24 runs and 24 hits were the most all season for the
Falcons.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) pitched just the first inning and
stepped aside for freshmen
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) and
Cereena Marquez (Granite Hills HS),
as the three combined for a one-hitter and struck
out three.
With 24 runs and
24 hits on the day, seven different players had
multiple-hit games, while everyone who had an at-bat
collected at least one hit. Godoy led the way by
going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored,
while freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) was also
4-for-5 with a pair or RBI and two runs scored.
Additionally, freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) went
3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, with freshman
Lindsey Marquez (Gahr HS)
going 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, as well as
her fifth home run of the year.
Sophomore
Kayla Campo
(Mira Costa HS) came off the bench and went
2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while
freshman
Alyssa
Morales (Gahr HS) was 1-for-3
with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore third
baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) had a
2-for-2 day with three RBI, three runs scored and a
pair of walks.
