Freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
needed only one pitch on Friday to set a new school
record for most home runs in a season. With teammate
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS) on
first base, Vaaulu sent the first offering from Los
Angeles Harbor College's Heather Ward over the
center field fence for her 14th home run of the
season. Her total breaks the record of 13, set by
Jessica Navarro during the 2007
season. Vaaulu and the rest of the Falcons pounded
out 15 hits in a 13-3 South Coast Conference win
over the Seahawks. With the win, Cerritos is now
34-9-1 on the year and 16-1 in SCC play with one
game remaining. The Falcons will host Pasadena City
College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
In addition to
Vaaulu's home run, sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) sent her
fifth over the fence for a two-run home run in the
third inning with Vaaulu on base. With her two runs
driven in, Vaaulu now has 55 RBI on the season,
which is the second most in a season in Falcon
history. The record of 71 was set by Navarro in
2007.
Cerritos scored
runs in every inning to post the victory, which
included five different players registering two RBI
apiece. Two of those players, sophomore
Kayla Campo
(Mira Costa HS) hit a two-run double, while
Alyssa Morales (Gahr HS) had
an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. The Falcons blew
the game open in the sixth inning, as Godoy and
freshman outfielder
Lauren Castrellon
(Downey HS) each and two-run hits.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) earned her 24th win on the year to
move into sixth place on the school's single-season
record list. The record of 34 wins was set by
Navarro in 2007. On the day, Perez-Ashley pitched
five innings and allowed two runs (one earned),
while striking out two.
