The Cerritos
College softball team, looking to get the
post-season underway, seemed to be in playoff mode
already after registering a 17-0, 5-inning win at
Nancy Kelly Field against Pasadena City College on
Tuesday to close out their regular season. The
Falcons, champions of the South Coast Conference,
will enter the playoffs with a 35-9-1 record, while
they finished the SCC season with a 17-1 mark. As
for the Lancers, they close out their season at
20-19 overall and 7-11 in the SCC. The first round
of the Southern California Regional Playoffs will
get underway May 1-2 at Nancy Kelly Field against an
opponent to be determined later.
The Falcons opened
the game by scoring seven times in the first inning
and never looked back against the Lancers. Freshman
right fielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) started
the inning with a base hit and stole second base
before moving to third on a wild pitch. Freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) doubled
home Castrellon before sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) followed
with an RBI single. After another base hit and an
error, freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) and
sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) each
collected RBI hits. Castrellon rounded out the
scoring in the inning with a two-run single.
That was enough
run support for freshman starting pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who pitched the first two innings,
while freshman
Cereena
Marquez (Granite Hills HS)
went the next two before freshman
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) pitched
the fifth. The trio combined to allow just three
hits and struck out four with Perez-Ashley (25-5)
earning the win.
Vaaulu, who set
the school record for most home runs in a season
last week, hit her 15th of the season on top of the
new power plant building over the left-field wall to
lead off the second inning. Miera drilled her second
home run of the year in the third inning, a two-run
blast, while freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) also added a
two-run single in the third inning.
On the day, Salas
(2-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Marquez (3-for-4, 3 RBI)
and Miera (3-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 runs) all drove in
three runs, while Castrellon, Vaaulu and freshman
shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) each had two
hits to lead the way for Cerritos.
