Coming off a state
championship last year, the Cerritos College
softball team knew that they would be the biggest
target a team could knock off every time they
stepped onto the field. The Falcons responded each
time and posted a 35-9-1 regular season record,
while they went 17-1 in South Coast Conference play
to win their second title in a row. The team will
now being their "second season", as they open the
first round of the Southern California Regional
Playoffs on Saturday, May 2 as the #2-seeded team.
Cerritos will host #15-seeded Ventura College
(25-18), the second place finisher in the Western
State Conference North Division in a best-of-three
series. The first game will be played at 2:00 p.m.
on Saturday, while the second is scheduled for 12:00
p.m. on Sunday, with a third game at 2:00 p.m., if
necessary.
The upcoming
series with the Pirates will mark the second time
the two teams will face each other. Back on January
30 in the Glendale Tournament, the Falcons opened
with an 11-7 win in five innings over Ventura.
Cerritos scored 10 runs in the first inning to open
an insurmountable lead and saw the Pirates score six
runs in the third inning. In that game, four
different players drove in a pair of runs, while all
nine starters collected at least one hit.
