Leading 8-7
heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the
Cerritos College softball team saw Palomar College
score a pair of runs off freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) to post a 9-8 non-conference win over
the Falcons on Tuesday. Cerritos (6-1-1) will now
travel to Saddleback College on Wednesday for a 3:00
p.m. non-conference game.
The Falcons broke
a 7-7 tie with a run in the top of the seventh
inning, as sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) drew a
one-out walk. A base hit by freshman outfielder
Alyssa Morales (Gahr HS) put
runners at first and second base. Freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS)
followed with an RBI triple that scored pinch-runner
Kayla Campo (Mira Costa HS),
while Morales was thrown out at the plate trying to
score.
In the bottom of
the stanza, the Comets picked up back-to-back
singles by Andre Nedden and Amanda Avila to start
the inning. Sarah Vlahos moved the runners over with
a sacrifice, while a walk to Kristen Herrera loaded
the bases. Shawna Barrow ended the game with a
two-run double, her third hit of the game.
Cerritos led 1,0,
5-3 and 7-5 at different points in the game, but
could not hold their leads. Freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) went
3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while
freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) was 3-for-5
with two runs scored.
