A young Cerritos
College softball team is learning firsthand about
the rigors of a busy schedule that requires teams to
play upwards of six games in a weekend and then come
back to play back-to-back games during the week.
After the Falcons went 5-0-1 at the Glendale
Tournament over the weekend, the team lost their
second one-run game in as many days, a 5-4 decision
to Saddleback College on Wednesday in a
non-conference contest. The Falcons (6-2-1) will now
compete in the Green and Gold Tournament at Bill
Barber Park in Irvine this weekend, weather
permitting.
For the second day
in a row, the team held a lead, but could not hold
on. Cerritos scored four runs in the top of the
third innings, thanks largely to a three-run home
run by sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS).
However, the Gauchos matched those four runs and
then scored the eventual game-winner in the bottom
of the fifth inning.
In the third,
sophomore outfielder
Kayla Campo
(Mira Costa HS) drew a walk to lead off the
inning. After freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) sacrificed
her to second base, freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) singled to
put runners at the corners. Salas then powered a 1-0
pitcher over the fence for a three-run blast. The
fourth run of the inning came on a base hit by
sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS), while a
Saddleback error put the runner in scoring position.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) went the first three innings and
allowed four runs on four hits (all in the third
inning). The big hit was a bases loaded double by
Starr White, which tied the game at 4-4. Freshman
pitcher
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS)
surrendered an unearned run in the fifth, which
turned out to be the game-winner.
