Although the
Cerritos College softball team trailed 3-0 heading
into the bottom of the second inning, they knew that
they would still get plenty of chances to swing
their bats. The Falcons responded with seven runs in
the bottom of the second inning, thanks to a grand
slam by freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS).
Complimenting the grand slam was a two-run home run
just two batters later by freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) that
highlighted a seven-run inning. The Falcons went on
to post an 11-3 win, as the game was halted in the
bottom of the fifth inning after the mercy rule
(eight-run lead) in enacted.
Cerritos (7-2-1)
will now travel to Grossmont College tomorrow and
face Chaffey College at 1:00 p.m. and then the host
Griffins at 3:00 p.m. in a pair of non-conference
games.
Cypress (1-1)
opened the game with a display of their own power,
as Kayle Van Dieren sent a 1-2 pitch over the center
field wall off freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS). The Chargers also received a bases
loaded walk in the first inning and tacked on an
unearned run in the top of the second after Kim
Frazier drove in Van Dieran, who reached on an error
and stole second base.
But that's all of
offense Perez-Ashley (5-1) and the Cerritos defense
allowed, as the team turned a pair of double plays
to get out of a couple of situations.
The bottom of the
second inning started off innocently enough, as
freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) drew a walk
off starting pitcher Roni Alvarado. A base hit by
freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) was
followed by an out and an RBI single from sophomore
third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS). Freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) loaded
the bases with an infield hit. Up stepped Marquez,
who drilled her fourth home run of the season for a
5-3 lead. Sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) followed
with a base hit before Vaaulu drilled the first
offering well over the 200-foot wall for her fifth
of the season.
Cerritos added a
solo run in the fourth, thanks to an error. Marquez
picked up her fifth RBI of the game with a base hit
that scored Miera, who reached base on an error by
outfielder Jackie Orosco. In the fifth, Miera led
off with a walk before Castrellon put runners on the
corners with a base hit. The two pulled off a double
steal before a wild pitch brought home Castrellon
with the run that ended the game.
