The Cerritos
College softball team split a pair of home games on
Sunday, as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Fullerton
College and posted an 8-0 win over Antelope Valley
College in a game that was halted after five innings
due to the mercy rule. The Falcons (10-3-1) will now
open South Coast Conference play on Monday at 3:00
p.m. when they host Los Angeles Harbor College, who
is fielding a team for the first time.
In the loss, the
Hornets scored the game's only run in the top of the
sixth inning off freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley
(Long Beach Poly HS). As for the Cerritos
bats, they had just two hits in the game and only
had one runner reach second base.
Things were
different in the win over the Marauders, as the team
scored twice in the first inning and opened up their
huge lead after freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) blasted a
three-run home run in the third inning for a 6-0
lead.
The scoring opened
in the bottom of the first inning with two outs when
sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) singled
before freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) and
freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) each drew
walks. A bases loaded walk to sophomore third
baseman
Desire
Miera (Downey HS) forced in
the first run, while Vaaulu scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman second
baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) drove in
freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Gahr HS) in the second
inning, while Ventura's home run gave the team a big
lead. The scoring was concluded in the fourth inning
after Vaaulu led off with a double and a base hit by
Samlones put runners at the corners. Ventura picked
up her fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly,
while freshman pinch-hitter
Gina
Alcarez (Torrance HS) picked
up an RBI single.
Freshman
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) started
the game in the circle and picked up the win, while
Perez-Ashley came in to pitch in the fourth inning.
