Cerritos College
freshmen pitchers
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) and
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) combined
to toss a six-inning 8-0 no-hitter over Los Angeles
Harbor College in their South Coast Conference
opener at Nancy Kelly Field on Monday afternoon. It
appeared as though the Seahawks (6-3, 0-1) would
break up the no-hitter until they were called for
using a pinch-hitter twice in the same game for the
same player. As a result, the batter was called out,
thus keeping the no-hitter alive. The Falcons
(10-3-1, 1-0) will now travel to face LA Harbor at
3:00 p.m. on Friday in another SCC contest.
In the bottom of
the first inning, Cerritos put two on the
scoreboard, thanks to a two-run home run by freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS), her fifth
of the season. Freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) led off
by reaching base on an error, the first of five the
LA Harbor on the day. After a pair of outs, Vaaulu
crushed the first pitch she saw over the
left-centerfield fence.
The Falcons put
the game out of reach in the fourth inning, as they
scored five more times, thanks to three more errors.
With one out, freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Gahr HS) was safe at
first base after LA Harbor right fielder Steph
Ramirez dropped a fly ball. Castrellon made the
error cost the Seahawks two runs as she hit her
third home run of the season. The inning kept going
when a pair of LA Harbor infielders could not decide
who would catch a popup from freshman second baseman
Lindsey Marquez (Granite Hills HS)
and it fell in for a single.
Left fielder April
Garcia also dropped a fly ball by sophomore
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) before a
base hit by Vaaulu loaded the bases. After the
second out of the inning was recorded, Salas scored
on a wild pitch before sophomore third baseman
Desiree Miera (Downey HS)
doubled in two more runs. The game ended in the
sixth on back-to-back doubles by Marquez and Salas
gave the team an 8-0 lead.
As for
Perez-Ashley and Avila, they combined to record 10
ground ball outs, while a walk by Perez-Ashley to
Nikki Uranga in the second inning prevented them
from throwing a perfect game. Perez-Ashley pitched
the first five, while Avila was in the circle for
the sixth.
