Thanks to an
11-run first inning, the Cerritos College softball
team was able to post a 16-4 South Coast Conference
win at Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday
afternoon. The win over the Seahawks was the second
in the week, as the Falcons improved 12-3-1 overall
and 2-0 in conference action, while LA Harbor
dropped to 6-5 and 0-5. The team will now return
home to host East Los Angeles College at 3:0 p.m. on
Tuesday.
In the first
inning, the Falcons scored three times and had the
bases loaded before the first out was recorded.
Freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) opened the
scoring with a double that brought home freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS), while
sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) followed
with an RBI triple. Freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) singled in
a run before freshman
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) and
sophomore third baseman
Desire
Miera (Downey HS) both walked.
After the first
out was recorded, freshman
Brandi
Rummel (La Serna HS) cleared
the bases with a triple, while freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Gahr HS)
drove in a run. Before the inning was over, Vaaulu
and Salmones and run-scoring singles, while Miera
doubled in two runs.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who shared in a no-hitter on Monday,
pitched the first three innings and allowed two runs
(one earned), while striking out four. Freshman
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) came on to pitch
the final two innings and also allowed two runs (one
earned) and struck out two batters.
Before the game
was over, Marquez, Vaaulu and Godoy all hit solo
home runs. The team finished with 16 hits, led by
Vaaulu, who went 4-for-4 with five RBI and three
runs scored, while Marquez had three hits, scored
four runs and drove in a pair. Salas (2-for-4, two
runs, RBI), Godoy (2-for-4, two runs two RBI) each
had multiple-hit games, while Rummell had three RBI
and Miera drove in two.
