Riding the power
of three solo home runs and excellent pitching, the
Cerritos College softball team was able to record a
3-1 South Coast Conference win over East Los Angeles
College at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Falcons are now 13-3-1 overall and
3-0 in SCC action, while the Huskies dropped to 8-4
and 0-1. On Thursday, the team will travel to face
Mt. San Antonio College in a match-up of the last
two state championship games. Cerritos won the title
in 2008 by beating the Mounties, while Mt. SAC
defeated the Falcons in the finals in 2007.
Cerritos took a
2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) drilled
a one-out home run, her fourth of the season. Two
batters later, sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) clubbed
her second of the year, while she followed that
at-bat with her third of the season in the fifth
inning that gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) ran her record to 10-2 on the season,
limiting the Huskies to just one run on five hits,
while striking out eight. She worked out of a second
inning jam by striking out the last two batters, and
after surrendering a two-out double in the sixth
that made the score 3-1, she got Nicole Torres to
ground out to end the inning.
Through the first
17 games this season, the Falcons have hit 19 home
runs and legged out 14 triples. In going 43-5 last
season, Cerritos hit 29 home runs and had 15
triples.
