Ever since Mt. San
Antonio College defeated the Cerritos College
softball team in the 2007 state championship game,
the two teams have faced each other six times.
Including their win over the Mounties in the 2008
state championship game, the Falcons have defeated
the Mounties five out of the last six times. The
most recent win over the course of that streak is a
4-0 South Coast Conference win at Mt. SAC on
Thursday afternoon. With the victory, Cerritos is
now 14-3-1 overall and 4-0 in SCC action, while the
Mounties dropped to 12-4 and 2-1. The team will now
travel to Bakersfield College on Saturday for a
non-conference double header.
In the win over
Mt. San Antonio, the Falcons scored a pair of runs
in the top of the third inning and added two
insurance runs in the seventh. Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) tossed a four-hitter and struck out
four batters to improve her record to 11-2 on the
season. She surrendered a two-out triple in the
second inning and also had runners in scoring
position in the final two innings, but worked out of
the jam.
At the plate,
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) tripled
home freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS), who led off
the inning with a walk. After the three-base hit,
freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) brought home
Castrellon with a sacrifice fly.
With two outs in
the seventh inning, Marquez drew a two-out walk and
advanced to second base on a passed ball. After
freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) walked, the
two runners moved up a base on another passed ball.
That set the table for sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS), who
drove them both in with a double.
