The Cerritos
College softball team spent Saturday afternoon
playing two games with host Bakersfield College and
came away with a split. The Falcons (15-4-1)
defeated the Renegades, 11-1 in the first game, but
dropped a 4-1 decision in the second. The team will
now resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday at
3:00 p.m. when they host El Camino College.
In the first game,
the Falcons pounded out three home runs and added
two doubles to highlight a 13-hit attack. Freshman
first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) gave the
team a 4-0 lead in the second inning with her
two-run blast, while sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) clubbed her
own two-run home run in the third inning. Freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) added a
solo shot in the fourth inning.
Freshman pitcher
Joanna Avila (El Rancho HS)
earned the win with her four innings of work, as she
allowed just two hits, while freshman
Cereena
Marquez (Granite Hills HS)
came on to pitch the fifth inning.
Cerritos struggled
defensively in the second game, as a pair of errors
in the second inning led to three Bakersfield runs.
Freshman
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) was
victimized by the miscues and suffered the loss in
the circle after just 1 2/3 innings of work.
Freshman
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) came on to end the second inning and
finished up the game.
The Falcons had
their chances on offense, but left nine runners on
base. They had runners at first and third in the
first inning, while Miera was stranded at third base
in the fourth inning after she doubled home freshman
outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS). Freshman
Lindsey Marquez (Gahr HS)
doubled and moved to third on a fly ball, but was
left at third base, while Cerritos also had runners
at first and second in the seventh inning with no
outs, but couldn't score.
