The Cerritos
College softball team ran their South Coast
Conference record to 6-0 on Thursday when they
posted a 6-1 win at Long Beach City. The
Falcons, who are also 17-4-1 on the year, will
now travel to Fullerton College on Saturday for
a pair of non-conference games. They will open
at 9:00 a.m. against the host Hornets and follow
that with a game at 11:00 a.m. against Cuesta
College. It was Fullerton who handed Cerritos
one of their losses this season, a 1-0 decision
on February 22 at Nancy Kelly Field.
In the win
over the Vikings, the Falcons scored three runs
in the second inning and then upped their lead
to 5-0 after single runs in the fourth and fifth
inning. The scoring started when freshman first
baseman
Ashley Ventura (Carson HS)
was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Freshman outfielder
Devin Salmones (Gahr HS)
then singled, with pinch-runner
Gina
Alcaraz (Torrance HS)
advancing to third base. Freshman designated
hitter
Brandi Rummell (La Serna HS)
then got the team on the board with an RBI
single, while freshman second baseman
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
doubled home both runners for a 3-0 advantage.
Castrellon
gave the team a 4-0 lead with a solo home run in
the fourth inning, with Ventura walking with one
out to get the rally going in the fifth inning.
After a Salmones base hit and a fielder's
choice, freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS)
singled in the fifth run of the game.
Freshman
pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long
Beach Poly HS) picked up her 12th win of
the season despite allowing 10 hits to Long
Beach City. In the first inning, Perez worked
out of a bases loaded jam, while she did the
same in the seventh inning to end the game.
For the
Falcons, Castrellon went 2-for-5 with three RBI,
while Salmones was 3-for-4 with two runs scored
and an RBI.
