Entering their
non-conference game at Fullerton College Saturday
morning, the Cerritos College softball team had
suffered one of their four losses on the season to
the Hornets. After falling behind 2-0 after the
first inning, the Falcons put four on the board in
the third inning and went on to win, 5-4. They
followed that game up with a 6-1 non-conference win
over Cuesta College to improve their season record
to 19-4-1. Cerritos will now travel to Santiago
Canyon College for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game
on Monday.
The comeback
against Fullerton started when freshman designated
hitter
Brandi
Rummel (La Serna HS) walked
to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt,
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) drew a
walk. Freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) then drilled
a two-run double to tie the game before freshman
catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) hit her
first of two home runs in the game, giving the
Falcons a 4-2 advantage.
After allowing an
unearned run in the fourth inning, Vaaulu slammed
her 10th home run of the year for a 5-3 lead.
Fullerton scored a run in the fifth inning, but
freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) worked out of the inning and shut the
Hornets down to rest of the way to pick up her 12th
win of the season.
Cerritos did open
their game against the Cougars with a run in the
first inning, thanks to an RBI double by Marquez
that scored Castrellon, who singled and stole second
base. But after freshman starting pitcher
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) gave up a
run in the bottom of the stanza, the Falcons scored
the next five runs, including three in the seventh
inning on a three-run Castrellon home run. Avila,
who was relieved by Perez-Ashley in the third
inning, allowed six hits in 2 1/3 innings, while
Perez-Ashley picked up the victory afetr going the
rest of the game.
Sophomore
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) hit a
solo home run in the sixth inning, her fourth of the
year, while Castrellon's blast was her seventh of
the year. Through the first 24 games, the Falcons
have now hit 29 home runs.
