The Cerritos
College softball team used a 13-run third inning
against Santiago Canyon College on Monday afternoon
to highlight their 16-7 non-conference victory. The
win was the fifth in a row and 11th in their last 12
games for the Falcons (20-4-1), who resume South
Coast Conference play when they host Pasadena City
College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
So far this
season, Cerritos has used the long ball to score
runs in bunches. But in their 10-hit attack against
the Hawks (7-10), the Falcons had only two doubles,
while they drew 10 walks. With one out in the
inning, freshman catcher
Samantha
Vaaulu (Warren HS) singled,
while sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) and
sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) each drew
walks to load the bases. Freshman first baseman
Ashley Ventura (Carson HS)
then singled home two runs, while freshman
designated hitter
Brandi
Rummell (La Serna HS) picked
up an RBI when she walked with the bases loaded.
Freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) broke the
game wide open with a three-run triple, while
Ventura drove in two more in the inning, as did
Rummell.
Freshman pitcher
Joanna Avila (El Rancho HS)
pitched the first three innings and earned the win,
while freshman
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) accounted for the final three innings.
Vaaulu, Salas and Ventura each had two hits, while
Rummell, Salas and Godoy all drove in three runs in
the win.
