In what has become
the norm for the Cerritos College softball team,
they used a six-run third inning to help them post
an 8-0 win over Pasadena City College in a
five-inning South Coast Conference game on Tuesday
afternoon at Nancy Kelly Field. The win improves the
Falcons to 21-4-1 overall and 7-0 in SCC play, while
the Lancers dropped to 13-9 and 3-4. Cerritos will
now travel to East Los Angeles College on Thursday
for a 3:00 p.m. conference affair.
The big third
inning started with a lead-off single by freshman
designated hitter
Brandi
Rummell (La Serna HS),
followed by freshman shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) getting hit
by a pitch. After a base hit to right field by
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) loaded
the bases, Lancer pitcher Melissa O'Connor unleashed
a pair of wild pitches that allowed two runs to
score. Freshman second baseman
Lindsey
Marquez (Gahr HS) then drove
in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
After sophomore
outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) singled,
freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) hit into a
fielder's choice, while sophomore third baseman
Desiree Miera (Downey HS)
followed with an RBI base hit. The hits continued
with freshman outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) recording a
single, while freshman
Gina
Alcaraz (Torrance HS), who
pinch-ran for Rummell, closed out the scoring in the
inning with a two-run single.
The Falcons added
a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to
give the team an 8-0 lead and end the game after the
Lancers batted in the fifth run due to the eight-run
mercy rule. Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) improved her record to 15-2 on the
year, as she limited Pasadena City to a pair of base
hits in the fourth inning and struck out five on the
day.
