On the strength of
a four-run fifth inning, the Cerritos College
softball team won their seventh consecutive game and
remained in first place in the South Coast
Conference. The Falcons defeated host East Los
Angeles College, 4-0 on Thursday afternoon to
improve to 8-0 in the SCC, while they are 22-4-1 on
the year. The team will now travel to Cypress
College on Saturday for a pair of non-conference
games. They will face Grossmont College at 1:00 p.m.
and then go up against the host Chargers at 3:00
p.m.
In the fourth
inning, freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren
HS) and sophomore outfielder
Jennifer
Salas (California HS) each
singled with one out. Freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) then broke
the scoreless tie with a base hit, while sophomore
third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) slapped out
an RBI single to keep the inning alive. Freshman
outfielder
Devin
Salmones (Gahr HS) brought in
the third run with a sacrifice fly, while freshman
shortstop
Cassandra
Godoy (Downey HS) closed out
the scoring with an RBI single.
Freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) ran her season record to 16-2 with a
four-hit shutout, her fifth shutout of the season.
She surrendered two hits in the second inning and
got out of a bases loaded jam when she struck out
Amber Lopez, who fouled off four pitches before
going down on strikes. The Huskies did advance
runners to second base in three other innings, but
Perez-Ashley got out of each inning unscathed.
