For the second
time this season, the Cerritos College softball team
lost two games in a row. Unlike the first time, the
Falcons lost both of the games on the same day. On
Saturday, the team suffered a 4-1 non-conference
loss to Grossmont College and followed that with a
record-breaking 15-13 loss to host Cypress College.
The two losses drops the Falcons record to 22-6-1,
as they resume South Coast Conference play on
Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Mt. San Antonio.
The 28 runs scored
in the game against the Chargers was the most by two
teams in a regulation seven-inning game. The Falcons
scored all of their runs in two innings, as they
scored eight in the second inning and the other five
in the fifth inning. After each run outburst,
Cerritos took the lead, but saw Cypress come right
back to regain the lead, with their 13-12 lead
evaporated after allowing three Charger runs in the
bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS) ended
up pitching the entire game and allowed 16 hits,
with four of the 15 runs being unearned. She didn't
let her difficulty in the circle affect her hitting,
as she led the team with three hits and four RBI,
including a bases loaded double that scored three
runs in the second inning. Freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren
HS) also had three hits and drove in a pair, as
did freshmen
Brandi
Rummel (La Serna HS) and
Devin Salmones (Gahr HS).
In the loss to
Grossmont, freshman
Joanna
Avila (El Rancho HS) pitched
into the fifth inning and allowed all four runs to
suffer the loss. Cerritos scored their lone run in
the second inning on an RBI single from Vaaulu that
scored Castrellon. Looking to add more in the
inning, the Falcons stranded runners at second and
third base when freshman first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) popped up
to end the inning. The team had a pair of runners on
base in the seventh, but could not push any of them
across the plate.
