If the Cerritos
College softball team would have defeated Mt. San
Antonio College on Tuesday afternoon, their lead in
the South Coast Conference would have been four
games over the Mounties. However, after hitting
three home runs, Mt. SAC was able to stay within two
games of the Falcons with a 9-4 win at Nancy Kelly
Field. The loss was the third in a row for Cerritos,
who dropped to 22-7-1 overall and 8-1 in the SCC,
while the Mounties improved to 22-8 and 6-3. The
Falcons will now travel to El Camino College on
Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. conference game.
Mt. San Antonio
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on
a three-run home run by Ashlynn Booker, her first of
two on the day. For the Mounties, they hit three
home runs off Falcon pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who had only allowed four all season.
Perez-Ashley also saw her record fall to 16-3 with
the loss.
Cerritos did get a
pair of those runs back in the bottom of the stanza,
as Mt. SAC pitcher Carissa Bronson had trouble with
her accuracy. After allowing a lead-off single to
freshman outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS),
Bronson walked three of the next five batters to
force in a run. Sophomore third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) added a
run-scoring single, while the Falcons left the bases
loaded.
From that point
forward, the Mounties continued to hit Perez-Ashley,
as scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth
innings. Booker hit her second of the game in the
third inning, while Christie Nieto added a solo
blast in the fourth. Mt. SAC busted the game open
with three more in the seventh and finished with 17
hits on the day.
Freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
hit her 11th home run in the bottom of the seventh
inning, a two-run blast, that accounted for the
final score. Her 11th home run ties her for second
on the school's single-season record list with
Jessica Navarro, while Navarro holds the record with
13 round-trippers in a season.
