Knowing that a
loss to Long Beach City College on Tuesday would
cut their lead atop the South Coast Conference
standings in half, the Cerritos College softball
team made no mistake about wanting more of a
cushion between themselves and the rest of the
pack. The Falcons blasted three home runs
against the Vikings at Nancy Kelly Field en
route to a 10-0, 5-inning game. With the win,
Cerritos is now 10-1 in the SCC and 24-8-1
overall, while LBCC dropped to 21-8 and 7-3. The
Falcons will now travel to Pasadena City on
Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. game.
After failing
to score in the first inning, Cerritos saw
freshman designated hitter
Brandi Rummel (La Serna HS)
blast a 1-0 offering from Viking pitcher
Christine Gonzalez well over the fence for a
solo home run, her third of the year. Just an
inning later, freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
hit a ball onto the roof of the new power plant
over the left field fence for a three-run home
run. After freshman third baseman
Desiree
Miera (Downey HS) led off
with a base hit, freshman outfielder
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS)
followed with a single. After both runners were
moved over on a sacrifice bunt, the Vikings
chose to pitch to Vaaulu, who ended up hitting
her 13th home run of the season. Vaaulu is now
tied for the school's single-season home run
record with Jessica Navarro,
who set the record in 2007.
The Falcons
then added six more in the fourth to put the
game out of reach, with freshman outfielder
Devin Salmones (Gahr HS)
hitting her second home run of the year, another
three-run shot. After freshman shortstop
Cassandra Godoy
(Downey HS) doubled in a run, Vaaulu
picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a
sacrifice fly, with sophomore outfielder
Jennifer Salas (California HS)
following with a run-scoring single. Freshman
second baseman
Lindsey Marquez (Gahr HS)
followed with a base hit, which set up the home
run by Salmones.
Freshman
pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long
Beach Poly HS) was the recipient of all the
offense, as she improved her record to 17-4 on
the year. She limited the Vikings to a lone
single, while she struck out five and walked
just one.
