Although the
Cerritos College softball team was unable to defend
their state title, it certainly doesn't mean it was
a lost season. The Falcons won over 40 games for the
second year in a row (41-11-1) - and only second
time in school history - while they captured the
South Coast Conference title for the second season
in a row. The team also advanced to the state
tournament, where they attempted to be the first
school in the eight-team format to come back from
losing their first game to win six game in two days
to win the title. They won two on the first day, but
just didn't have enough in the tank and were
eliminated by Sierra College, 8-1 on Saturday.
For their efforts
at the state tournament, a trio of Cerritos players
were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Freshman
first baseman
Ashley
Ventura (Carson HS) batted
.313 and hit the game-winning home run to defeat
Cypress College, 11-10 in the second game of the day
on Saturday. She shared the team lead with two home
runs, six RBI and 12 total bases with freshman
outfielder
Lauren
Castrellon (Downey HS). In the
Cypress game, Castrellon hit a pair of home runs,
while she also threw out two runners trying to take
extra bases in the first Sierra game. The third
Falcon was freshman pitcher
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS), who went the distance in the
11-inning game against Cypress and then tried to
come right back to face Sierra. Although she had a
4.15 ERA, she pitched 27 innings (20 of them in one
day), while she struck out 14 and completed two
games.
In addition to the
team's success, four single-season individual
